I know it’s kinda late in the game to still be composing my college list, but I’m really not sure about my colleges. Right now, I like all the colleges on my list, but I’m unsure if I could realistically get into them. I have pretty high stats although they aren’t perfect, solid ECs with leadership positions, and one EC that I’m really focused in and have received national/international awards for. I’m a reading/writing person so my essays will probably be fine. However, I’m not some exemplary crazy talented genius like some people on this site, and I’m scared that I won’t get in anywhere.
This is my current list:
Yale (prob first choice)
2.Vanderbilt
Brown w/ RISD
Rice
Emory
Duke
Wash U (I’ve shown ALOT of interest so maybe that helps)
UPenn (maybe)
UChicago
I’ve already been accepted into the honors program at my state school and I applied EA to UVA.
Should I apply to some more realistic schools? Just tell me the cold hard truth.
Where do you really want to go? What state are you from and will you be surrounded by the type of people that you want to go to school in the honors program there?
If you are okay with the honors program at your state university, you can apply to all reaches. You can also wait for the EA from UVA to come in, and if it’s bad news have a back up plan of slightly easier to get into schools. For a humanities leaning student who prefers mid-sized research universities, that isn’t always that easy. One that comes to mind is Brandeis another is Tulane. Except for Emory all the colleges on your list have acceptance rates under 15%. And at least at our high school Emory regularly rejected high stats kids.
@Jennings99 I did mediocre on the SAT, but I got a 35 on the ACT so I’m just going to apply with that score.
I’m from Kansas, and the honors program at our flagship school is pretty good, but I really want to go out of state. Is Rice a reach really? I don’t want to sound arrogant, but I thought it was at least a match. UVA doesn’t let you know if you got in EA until the end of January, after the RD deadline for most colleges, so I can’t really count on it to tell me if I’m overshooting or not
@snarlatron While I did look on the USNWR list to get a bearing of where I should start looking, I certainly did not pick those schools simply for their ranking.
I plan to be a humanities student, but I’m also interested in the sciences so I wanted a well-rounded school where its pretty easy to switch majors if I change my mind.
I like Yale and Brown because they seem to lean more towards the humanities and they also have an “artsy” atmosphere or so I’ve heard. Yale has one of the top art schools in the nation and Brown has a dual degree program with RISD that I’m very interested in. I was in a summer program at Wash U so I got a pretty good feel of the campus, and I can definitely imagine myself as a student there. UChicago caught my attention with all its quirky essay prompts and fun mail they sent me. It’s also humanities based so I feel I would get a lot of support there. I’m not going to give all my reasons for selecting the schools I did, but trust that I did do my research.
Why are you in the Ole Miss post? Ur top 9 does not even list Ole Miss. Based on ur ACT, you’ll get in just about anywhere and will have ur tuition at least paid for. Sounds like ur top 3 are Yale, Wash U and Chicago. Ur gut sounds like Wash U. Visit U of C and Yale and make ur decision based on where you could see urself for 4 years.
You should apply to Ole Miss and the Honors College @Philery. It’s a nice mix of academic rigor on a state public university campus. Your score could put you in line for major scholarships? Do you happen to be a NMSF?
