Am I Chicana or just Latina or...what?

Alright, so I am starting to fill out my apps and I am having an issue with the "Ethnic Origin" box.

My grandfather's family way-back-when immigrated from Spain to what is now Texas, but before Texas was part of the United States. So basically, they immigrated to Mexico, and when that northern part of Mexico became an independent nation and then part of the United States, they stayed there. My grandmother's family (this is all on my father's side) originated in Mexico, or at least I think so.

My dad's side of the family is fully Hispanic...Hispanic names, Spanish-speakers, the food, the culture, the physical attributes, everything. But there is more than one box to check for this!

I can either check:
1. Mexican/Mexican-American/Chicano/Chicana
or
2. Other Spanish-American/Hispanic/Latino/Latina, in which case I would have to specify a country, so I guess I would put "Mexico by way of Spain." (Kidding, by the way).

The thing is that we're not just "Spanish." I know that I do NOT need to be making a big deal out of this but I am just confused and curious. I don't know how much anybody knows about this type of thing, but please help me out if you know anything!

1 for sure. The reason for multiple boxes is to distinguish Hispanics of Mexican and Puerto Rican origin as these are the two groups most desired by colleges.
