Hi everyone
I am really hoping if you could help me...
I am 25 years old, have bachelor's in bio sciences from state university,
don't have much experience in bio field, does NOT want master's in it.
I am now pursuing (or trying to pursue) nursing so I don't get hassled by my parents.
Now back to art.

Art has always been a part of me....
I gave up on art in high school bc i didnt get into summer school for this really good art school, so......... i gave up. i didnt think i had it... my parents werent so happy about me pursuing art anyway, went to college with no major, pursued to be what my parents wanted...
I know, so stupid of me, but i thought after graduating with bio degree, i thought i could do something, at least get a job, but no luck.

I know it might sound crazy to my family and my friends (who are also all bio majors, in professional schools...) but i really want to pursue art again.
I am already 28,000 in debt, but i think this is what i wanted for years in my life......

so here it is.
i want to go for fine arts and animations...
i like to draw, draw, draw....

id really like some honest opinions, you can call me crazy, but id really like some opinions and how to pursue this if u were me. and if u could gimme some school names and programs, thatd really help me out too. it doesnt hurt to look, right?

Do not go into any more debt - especially for another bachelors in the arts. I have a friend whose husband kept going to school - all on loans - he ultimately ended up with an MFA - trying to get the perfect arts education - he was in school continuously for 11 years – all on loans. It’s terrible. And you really cannot just declare bankruptcy etc. after that.

If you can get non loan aid or work and go to school part time for art - even looking for a job close to a school you like - then of course - go for your dreams, but you really do NOT want to end up with 100K in loans - public and private. It’s insane.

I know a lot of artists who’ve gotten their education over the long term, workshops, etc. There is really no required art degree to be an artist.

Is it possible you could take a few affordable art classes at your local CC while you finish your nursing program? Or are you choosing between art and nursing? As a science major, you should be able to get a BSN in just a year, or a year and a half, and then at least you can be employed and start to think about paying back your loans. At that point, you could continue drawing in your CC classes or at a local atelier and see how things go from there.

With a background in science and an interest in art you may want to consider medical illustration. RIT has a program, and I’m sure there are others out there too. But I agree with the other posters about not incurring more debt without a clear plan for yourself. Many schools offer tuition perks for employees. Perhaps you could get a job as a residence hall director or in an admissions office and take evening classes in order to meet your goals. Just some thoughts…

Become a nurse, take on a three on four off shift, and pursue art in your spare time. If illustration is your niche, there are a myriad of excellent books you can study to improve your drafting skills. I would say that any field of art, with the exception of perhaps glass blowing, could be heavily improved upon by simple self study.

If you wish to make art a career, a degree is arguably pointless. Put together an earth-shattering portfolio and join the desperate throngs.
