Am I doing enough for college?

I am currently a high school sophomore taking 4 honors classes- honors wind ensemble (on track to take this class for all 4 years of high school plus the 3 years of band in middle school), honors world history (AP US History next year), honors English (AP English next year), and honors math 3 (on track to take calculus next year as a junior) and 2 non honors classes - chemistry (AP Bio or AP Chem next year) and photography as well as a sport - girls golf in the fall and practicing with the boys golf team in the spring, and I’m on track to do this for all 4 years of high school. My extracurriculars include 1st chair trumpet in honors band, golf, NHS (which will provide me with at least 60 hours of community service by the time I graduate), Teen Voice Club, and photography. I currently have a 4.67 GPA and am ranked 9th out of 538 in my class, however as I just added photography to my schedule (a non honors class), I expect it to drop to a 4.5 GPA even if I get all A’s again. I have received the Cougar of the Month Award (our school mascot is a cougar) 3 times, which is an award where we are nominated by our teachers and our name is recognized by our state legislature assembly. I’m also working on an engineering project - building a small-scale hyperloop - for the science fair. I hope to join the CSF (California Scholarship Federation) Club as a junior, start working a summer job, continue taking language classes over the summer to get a bilingual seal on my diploma, become a tutor as a junior, and become a freshmen mentor as a junior. However I am concerned that I am not doing enough for college because one AP class is offered for sophomores at our school, AP European History, and I’m not taking it (I’m taking honors world history instead). I am also worried because I am a female hoping to go into the STEM field, but I shied away from taking honors chemistry because the teacher of that class at our school does not teach. The regular chemistry teacher is outstanding and I’m learning so much, but I don’t get honors credit. I know someone who is taking 2 science classes as a sophomore, one honors and one AP, because apparently you can get into any AP class, even if it’s not for sophomores, if you ask. I also know people who are taking all the honors classes and AP classes that are available as a sophomore, and getting straight A’s. I am extremely stressed as it is so I can’t imagine doing more, but I feel like I don’t do enough. My questions are: am I doing enough for college? are my extracurriculars strong? will being a female hoping to go into the STEM field help me?

I know this post is very long, I’ve been deeply worried about this for a long time, so any (hopefully multiple) serious answers will be greatly appreciated!

You have no reason to be worried. You’re doing fine. Just follow your passions and don’t try to fit into a formula for success. Try to take the best and most engaging teachers in the subjects you love.

Yes, you are doing enough! You are building an impressive resume. Some level of stress is expected, but being extremely stressed is not healthy. Study hard, but also make sure you have fun and enjoy your friends. Balance.

Notes:

  • Good grades and challenging courses (e.g. honors & AP) matter…a lot. Keep it up.
  • Follow your passions on your extracurriculars. Depth is important - meaning 4yrs of involvement in an activity you are passionate about with increasing levels of responsibilities/contributions each year is more impressive than being a 1yr member of 10 different clubs.
  • Test prep will be starting soon for the ACT or SAT. That test will be another very important data point for admissions to consider. Budget time for that when you think about your extracurricular schedule for next year.

Please don’t be deeply worried…you WILL go to college and you’ll love wherever you land. Good luck!

Thank you so much magtf1 and LoveTheBard! Your wisdom is much appreciated!
