Am I Going About This the Right Way?

Hello everyone I am senior in high school was wondering if I am going about my letters of rec in a good way. I emailed 5 teachers over the summer about writing a letter of rec and they all said that they would be happy to. So what I am planning to do is to have the teachers that have a reputation for great letters of rec write them for my harder schools to get into, and my safer schools by the other teachers. I kind of have ranked them in my head. So I was wondering if this was a good way to do this or if I should do something else. Any advice would be awesome and thanks in advance!

Your top schools should receive the letters from the teachers who value you as a student the most. I got 3 letters of rec, but I had more of a connection to a certain teacher and I trusted that the teacher would write a convincing letter.

You just send the same letters to all schools. You need 2, 3 max. They write a letter that doesn’t reference the schools by name so you can use them everywhere. I think you’ve put yourself in a bind, though, since you’ve already asked without understanding the process.

No HS teacher will be heartbroken by finding out they don’t need to write you a LOR

Our school limited students to 2 teacher recs. If you have another coach, religious org mentor, or even a family member who can write something uniquely special about you, that might be a third, but most do not have more than that. Some elite schools that are Math/Science/Eng type colleges want at least one math or science among the 2-3.

My S had 3 teachers write recommendations. His guidance counselor chose the strongest ones to submit to each school. Some schools allowed one recommendation while others allowed more. As a student you don’t see them. So, you really need someone looking out for you in the guidance dept.

Some colleges have preferences, maybe even requirements, as to which of your teachers should write recommendations, so be sure to check each college’s website.

As an example, here is what Kenyon says:

Agree that teachers don’t mind being told this if they haven’t already started. And that it is helpful to know what the colleges are requesting.

Both of my kids asked two teachers (one humanities, one STEM) since that was the maximum number of teacher recs that were allowed by the schools they applied to. They both spoke to their guidance counselor in advance about who to ask for the LORs. Maybe because I come from a family of teachers but it just doesn’t seem right to ask additional teachers to spend time and energy writing LORs that will not be used.
