can anyone give me some info on safety on campus, any dark alleys i should avoid?

lol, the scarrrry city.....

Um well Morningside Heights is right near Harlem, but don't worry. You'll see plenty of Columbia kids around the area at all hours of the night. The people will usually leave you alone- travel with a group.

wasn't that one girl's name "madelinemay" or something like that? A thread about safety always reminds me of her and how people made fun of her...the good ol' days of the ol' CC...back when I had a chance at CU and Duke...ahhh

I visited CU twice (I'm from rural NC). First time, I was with my dad, and we went through Harlem, several times. We stayed in NY and went to several other schools on the trip. It wasn't bad at all, but then again we were driving a crap car, during the day and wearing old clothes, so who would want to rob us. I walked with a friend the second time, but again, nothing on us stood out, and it was winter so everyone was inside. I felt completely safe on campus and off. I wouldn't have had any doubts if I went there. I'd visit first if I were you, to see how comfortable you would be.

If you're a caucasion female between the ages of 16-22 you always have the chance of being raped and then shot. Harlem is getting better but it still lives up to it's reputatoin as being the badest place next to Compton, CA.

LMAO, jtran10, a little too detailed, don't you think? ;)

If anyone cares about my 2 cents on this matter, it is this:

If you are from some suburban town in America where you rarely have crimes, New York City as a whole (not just Columbia) will be a new experience for you, you'll learn to be more cautious and less-trusting (& naive) toward other people, which could be both good and bad (many people achieve a reasonable balance)....but either way, safety ON the campus should not even be questioned because it's very effective.

Harlem is usually associated with some "bad things", but the parts bordering Columbia - Morningside Heights, is not at all a representation of Harlem.

People tends to sensationalize and over-exaggerate the dangers revolving living in a city, so relax everyone, it's no big deal.

And finally, if you are from a city or regularly visits one, you'll be just fine at adapting.

p.s. Madelinemay will forever be the safety freak legend on CC. :)

Columbia is in Morningside Heights and that precinct is actually the 2nd safest in NYC. That should be enough to tell you the campus is pretty safe.

Hahaha Madelinemay was more of a racist than a safety-freak from what I remember

just don't imitate "tokyo breakfast" really loud while you're walking around at night, hehe

hey, this is my first post after lurking around here for a while

I think NYC has gotten a lot safer over the last few years partially due to the 9/11 incident. My parents are still kinda worried about me going to NYC though... heh.

America as a whole is not safe...be on guard at all times no matter where you are! Make sense?

Yeah, the terrorists are out to get us! AHHHHH!!! ;)

Anyways, Columbia is on the edge of Harlem and it isn't that bad. But there are bars on the windows that face the outer edge of the campus, so you read into that however you like...

...there are a lot of fools on this forum, intellectuals no doubt about that but...many, many fools.

well, i don't think safety-wise its much different from any other inner city or going to new haven/baltimore/etc. at least its a vibrant metro setting, not some decaying postmanufacturing center.

LoL @ expo2005, "Tokyo Breakfast" was probably the funniest (& crudest) parody video I saw relating to race, hehehe.

"Good morning, my n****s!!!"

Oh man, bad taste, but very funny.

All of you who worry will have a good laugh at yourself when you actually see the university and its surroundings.

Guys, girls, seriously - there's really nothing to worry about.

Spider-man has got our backs, we'll all be fine.

lol redge; but who is Madelinemay

Madelinemay was this poster that really criticized Columbia's location - pretty much making racist arguments at some point. She mentioned how black people were less trustworthy than white people and so on. I'm not sure where the thread went, probably locked and deleted. Her arguments were completely unreasonable and hilarious. Everyone in the board thought she was ridiculous. She hasn't been around in a long time.

oh wow...totally different from what i pictured it...i thought she was this stalker, like a myth, that was told to all columbia students...lol, but as i can see from earlier posts that i made a stupid conclusion. :o
