Does UT regularly take Westwood kids below the top 10%? I think you have a chance of getting in straight up as Westwood has a great reputation. Does the school have a good relationship with UT?

That 52 this year is still less than their top 10% would allow (63) next year, so that doesn't tell me whether UT takes a lot from beyond the 10%. Perhaps UT does, because I would imagine some of those top Westwood kids go to other schools.

ya a whole bunch of people in my school go to UT, and its a really good school so i was thinking that UT might have preference (also same school colors! haha)

youdon'tsay: how do u know theres gonna be 63 kids in the top 10%? do u go to westwood as well? cuz just yesterday we got our class ranks.

judging from my experience you're probably going to get capped. they're pretty strict about their 10% rule and it takes more than a 2130 and decent extracurriculars to overcome it. you should look at University of Texas at San Antonio.

I would say you have a very good chance being accepted into UT. You have roughly them same stats as I had (I had a little higher SAT, and a little lower class rank), and I got into the summer program. I had almost no EC, so I would say you will at the very least get into the summer program, but will almost definately not be CAPed. Good luck.

Then you clearly have no experience what so ever, either that or your completely high. He is the top 13% at a instate feeder school with a SAT above 2100 and he is applying to natural sciences, there is no question he will get in. Please stop giving advice, because the top 10% rules isn't the only standard of admissions.

Lets put it this way, I was 13.5% with no ECs pretty much, and a 32 ACT and got into electrical engineering. My old roommate had almost the exact same rank, a 1950 and got into Natural Sciences. We both went the same kind of feeder school as you. You are in.

everyone who applies to UT from texas that is not admitted is going to get the CAP program no matter what. i've heard that they can't "put down" someone at a state school and that is why they offer this. my gpa/class rank was kind of similiar but at a little bit smaller school in texas (475 in class) and i got the cap program... just like everyone else who didn't get in!

mgm7275, did you have a 2100+ SAT and two 700+ SAT IIs? Those test scores really make him stand out.

I agree with foxshox and disagree with phantomslayer. I think that ynot is very likely to get in.

Over 1000 current class of 2009 Texas seniors who are not in the top 10% of their class are going to get letters of acceptance. I do not think there are more than 1000 "not top 10%" Texans applying with better credentials than ynot's.

I say 1000 not top 10% will be accepted because:
I think that like this year, next year's freshman class will include about 8000 students
I think that like this year, about 81% will come from the top 10%. Say 6480.
I think that like this year, about 9% will be out of state or international. Say 720.
6480 + 720 = 7200.

I think that means there are about 800 "from Texas but not top 10% students" currently first year students at UT. I think that means that over 1000 not top 10% students were accepted to get that yield of 800. So I think that over 1000 will be accepted next year.

But you know what? i think that even if only 500 not top 10% students were accepted, with a 3.74 GPA from a school that UT knows well (feeder school) and with test scores 2100+, 700+, 700+, and his extracurriculars, ynot would still get in.

I have to say, I am not sure about fall admission. Maybe the top 10% kids will fill the fall entries and he'll end up in freshman summer class. (That's okay. Many people LOVE freshman summer class.)

I'll be so curious to see how the economy affects class makeup for the fall. Upper middle class kids who now stay in-state? Poorer Valley kids who won't be able to swing UT in Austin and now have to stay more local? Maybe those two groups will cancel each other out and the top 10% numbers will remain at 80-85%.

no, MidwestMom2Kids, my SAT scores were nearly not that good!!! just the question was if they were going to get CAP and I know a lot of people have that question on their mind so I thought I would share that.

With those SAT scores and gpa and EC's, you should be a good candidate for summer school or regular admissions. i've heard summer school is really good though and I would definitely take advantage of it if you got that.
