Am I good enough for these schools?

Hello everyone! =)

I'm an American citizen currently living in Pakistan, but I'm planning to go back to the US for college. I think my nationality would technically be Pakistani-American or Asian-American.

Here are the colleges I'm planning to apply to:

Columbia University
Duke University
Harvard College
Johns Hopkins University
Stanford University
University of California - Berkeley
University of California - Los Angeles
University of Washington
University of Wisconsin - Madison
Washington University in St. Louis

And here's my info:

Thanks in advance =)

Oh, just a few more things to add:

I’m probably going to take the pre-med route, and I think I’ll major in something like Genetics or Molecular Biology. Those fields really interest me.

Also, there are still a few colleges floating around outside my list that might replace some of those already on there. I’ll keep the list at maximum 10 schools at a time though. Can you chance me for these also?

University of Michigan
University of Chicago
Purdue University
University of California - San Diego

Thanks again.

Sorry for the bump, I just need some answers =)

Hey! what a coincidence, I’m also a pakistani-american!

first things first. g.p.a. is actually calculated (using the most common formula) as 4=A, 3=B, 2=C, 1=D, 0=F. Maybe you got it mixed up with AP scores compared to O’Levels, which would kind of be A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, F=1?

Hmm… so let’s see, chances…
(Some of these are very optimistic, by the way)

Columbia University - about 15% chance
Duke University - about 10%
Harvard College - about 5%
Johns Hopkins University - about 50%
Stanford University - about 10%
University of California - Berkeley - about 50%
University of California - Los Angeles - about 70%
University of Washington - about 80+%
University of Wisconsin - Madison - about 80+%
Washington University in St. Louis - about 40%
University of Michigan - about 80+%
University of Chicago - about 30%
Purdue University - about 80+%
University of California - San Diego - about 80+%

If you need ten, go for Wisconsin, U Washington, Washington in St. Louis, Purdue, UCSD, UCLA, Berkeley, Chicago, Johns Hopkins… and Harvard just for fun to see what happens.

The only reason I think the upper-level ones could be a bit problematic is competition is tough here in paki for those schools and your sat scores are actually kind of below the averages they’re used to seeing. Some schools for sure will compare you to your region, like if you’re in karachi or lahore and all of pakistan even if you’re a US citizen because that’s where your school is. Don’t think you count as an international, though, so Financial Aid shouldn’t be a problem. Good luck on your SAT subject tests! Genetics is especially interesting, but your extracurriculars don’t seem to show any sort of dedication to that field. That could also be a bit of a problem.

Hope this helped.

Thanks very much hb730!! =)

I’ll have to make sure about that GPA thing, because the guidance counselor in my school told me that O-level grades make for a weighted GPA like that. I’ll check again though.

That ten you gave me is actually a good list, because Wisconsin, Berkeley, and UCLA, for example, were schools I actually -did- want to go to more. I’ve heard Wisconsin has an amazing biology program. If I were to narrow it down to, say, 8, would this be a good list?

Wisconsin
U Wash
Wash U St. Louis
UCLA
Berkeley
Johns Hopkins
UCSD
Harvard (Yes, I know I won’t get in but I’m being pushed to apply anyway)

If I take the SAT again, and get 2100+, will that really increase my chances for the upper-tier schools? Yeah, I double-checked and I’m not an international student, so I can still get financial aid.

Thanks about the subject tests! Do high scores in those increase your chances a lot? Well honestly in my school there aren’t very many extracurricular programs. All of them are student-made and student-run, the administration doesn’t fund anything. The presidents of each society schedules meeting and events at very strange times, sometimes even when I have a class, so of course I’d rather attend the class than attend the extracurricular. How much do extracurriculars matter anyway? Can I make up for that with, say, a good essay?

I was about to do an internship at a lab, but that never happened. Long story. I was also about to do one at a hospital, but… well I don’t even know.

Plus, don’t you have the chance to pick your major when you’re already in? Or do they consider the choices you will make when you’re still applying? Because I’m not even 100% sure about Genetics or medicine. Does it matter that I’m a bit broad-based?

Thanks again, you’ve been a great help so far.

Oh just a few more things to add, sorry:

Speaking of my 11th grade computer project, basically what I did was I developed an educational game type software for a school for special and disabled children. They are not currently using the software, but I’m going to tweak it this month, with help from my computing teacher, and then I will hand it over to them. My teacher thought it was so good that he wanted to use it for our school as an example of what a good project is.

Since I did it for that type of school, would it count as community service? Would this look good on an application and can I even include it?

Sorry for the re-re-bump, if that’s not allowed I’ll stop.

Anyway, using my stats that I posted earlier, and if I choose these schools, then can you guys do a Reach/Match/In/Safety thing for them? –

U Wisconsin - Madison
U Calif - Berkeley
UCLA
U Calif - San Diego
Johns Hopkins
Wash U St. Louis
U Michigan - Ann Arbor
U Washington
U Chicago

Ok scratch U Chicago from the list from my my last post, but could anyone please just give a look at the thread =(

For those colleges should I retake the SAT I if I got 2010/2400 (If only CR and M then 1330/1600)? Is there any point?

Bumpity-Bump.

Just got my SAT II Scores!!

Bio: 720
Chemistry: 710
Math Level 2: 680 =(

I’m feel pretty good about them overall. Are they good enough for the colleges I chose? =)

there is a website, (google mychances) that calculates your chances to any college you pick. (it asks you for your SAT/ACT, rank, gpa, ect.) The site says it is 80% accurate in the predictions. It may help you decide which colleges to apply to
