Hi everyone. My parents informed my sister and I that they will pay 0% of my college tuition. Now, they paid for my sister’s tuition, so she has only a moderate amount of loans. Now that she has a job, they expect her to help me out now.
I know this sounds crazy. Does this make me independent from my parents, and dependent from my sister? Or am I correct in keeping my parents on my FAFSA profile? Or… lol
No, independent status has nothing to do with your parents’ willingness to pay your tuition. You need to keep them on your Profile until you turn 24 or meet one of the conditions listed here.
No, you are not independent from your parents. I think you can only be independent from your parents in special circumstances, such as you are a foster child, an imancapated minor, or you life by yourself/are married. (I think- someone, correct me if I am wrong).
Yikes…I see that you’re a senior and you committed to Davis. What was your aid pkg from UCD???
When did your parents tell you this crazy idea? If it was only recently, then shame on them for not telling you this last year when you could have looked for big merit.
I’m sorry your parents just sprang this on you. I see on one of your other threads that your EFC is $38k. Without help from your parents, the most you’ll have is the federal student loan (about $5500/year). What are your stats? Did you get any merit awards from other schools? You may have to take a gap year and apply to schools you know you can afford. Would your parents let you live at home and commute to a local school?
@austinmshauri Thanks. Actually, it is only the first year that I will have to pay the OOS tuition. My mom is planning on reestablishing residency and moving. It is the first year I’m worried about
Are your parents separating? Is that what this is all about? Is the marriage ending so they don’t want to also pay for college??
And even if you got residency there, how will you pay the $32k to go there? You didn’t graduate from a Calif school; you won’t qualify for a Cal Grant or Blue and Gold Promise?
