Hello I am an Asian junior. Ever since 7th grade I have studied for sat(old and new). I’ve spent over thousands of hours studying critical reading and writing. I’ve looked over my mistakes on how, why, and what I missed. Ive learned over 100 test taking tips and tricks. My score cannot reach above 700. Please help. I feel like I’m just not genetically smart enough anymore.
This test that likely won’t matter once you enter college. I am saying this as an MIT graduate pursuing a master’s degree, who failed to score 700 on the SAT reading and writing (my best was 680 on writing).
Thank for replying. How do I raise my score. I’ve tried everything. If my scores don’t improve, I feel like I wI’ll have wasted like half of my life. All I have been doing other than school was SAT studying
@Studywillx777 you should find something more productive to do (e.g. pursue other activities, sports, clubs) than SAT studying since it doesn’t seem to be working for you. Or consider taking the ACT.
I agree with MITer94. If you have done every possible SAT practice and your score’s stuck at 700, then it’s time to move on and do something else to improve your college chances. You will be able to be admitted to some really good universities despite the 700. However, many U.S. schools will want to know what else you have done beyond studying (i.e. school activities/clubs/sports/volunteer work). More of the top U.S. schools want a whole person and not an academic robot.
Please know this is coming from a tutor who breezes through verbal but is still learning the nuances of math 25 years after my last math class. I know no matter how much time I could put into perfecting math, I will never be as strong in math as my wife. Conversely, she’ll never be as strong as I am in verbal. We all have different skill sets in life, and universities want students who can embrace this skills diversity.
I also think you should try ACT instead. Sometimes students will do better on that, but most of the tips and tricks you’ve learned will transfer from SAT to ACT.
It is JMHO but I think you should stop defining yourself by a number. The great thing about our country is that success is not limited to those with high SAT scores or graduation from the best universities. Many factors contribute to success including hard work, strong people skills, common sense, luck, and finding the right “thing” in life. There is so much more to life - previous posters are correct. Get out there an enjoy it. With a 700 you will get into many wonderful colleges/universities.
Many are correct that a 700 is more than enough to get into good colleges. As a junior, there’s more important things to focus on. Don’t feel like there’s a genetic disadvantage because anyone who gets a 700 is never considered ‘dumb’. If you really insist on retaking the SAT, I recommend a different method to studying. Erica Meltzer’s books provide lots of insider tips that have helped me score in the upper 700s. Just remember, don’t keep practicing or studying something if it’s wrong. Take a new approach instead of repeating things that aren’t working effectively.
