I am currently a sophomore in a CA high school and would like to attend GT with a biomedical engineering major
My weighted GPA is 4.46/4.0 unweighted
My Classes that I have taken are below:
Freshman: Lab Biology Honors, Geometry/Trig Honors, World History Honors, Chemistry, Photography
Summer: I took French 101 and 102 at Community College
Sophomore: Anatomy and Physiology, Algebra 2, Pre Calc, AP US history, English 10 honors
I was on varsity golf team freshman year and Varsity Tennis as a sophomore
I am an ambassador for NSHSS
I am the secretary for FIDM Fashion Club
I have organized a food drive for the local homeless women’s shelter
Have 50+ hours of community service
And I am currently in the process of starting Mu Alpha Theta for my school
I have been in contact with the MSE department at GT
If I were to be accepted and attend I would be third generation at Tech
If you have any suggestions to make my chances of getting into Tech higher, please leave a comment. I know I have not taken the SAT or ACT yet, but please leave any helpful tips!
Thank you!
I am a senior and was accepted this year - that being said, your first two years were very similar to my first two years. I would suggest taking as many AP classes as possible (AP Calculus is a must), and maintain your 4.0. I don’t know how much it matters, but try and do an extracurricular that shows interest in your major. I applied to biomedical, so I volunteered at my hospital and got a great letter of recommendation from a doctor there. Good luck applying!
@sns3242 Depending on how your scores turn out, I think you have a good shot. You should definitely try to take the Math Level 2 subject test as well as chemistry and physics (either or both). However, I was waitlisted. But, I got into CMU, JHU, Vandy, and Emory.
@xatlas interestingly, in my son’s case, it was completely opposite. He got wait-listed by JHU but accepted by GT. He has slightly less SAT score then yours. For CMU, the only major my son liked to consider was CS but then he found that it required to have separate application for CS and the chance to get in was very low. For this reason, dropped the application to CMU.
@ProdParent3S Yea, it is kind of strange. No one in my school that applied got in. Usually, Gtech takes around 5 or so. But the 5 that get in never go every year so maybe it’s a message to my high school.
I think over 95% of admitted students took AP calculus or equivalent, so it will be hard if you have not taken it. Perhaps you could take it at a local CC.
GT only wants calculus. It can be regular or the AP version. According to GT admission reps I have spoken to- your really have to have calculus in order to be a viable candidate.
Another thing you can do is try and participate in a summer program like COSMOS (California State Summer School in Science and Math). What is important is to be true to yourself- there is no magical activities you can do- rather pick two or three that you do that you truly enjoy and do them with breath and depth. I always found this interview by GT’s admission director to be really helpful. Read the paragraph on what GT looks for in an applicant. http://collegeadmissionbook.com/blog/rick-clark-director-admission-georgia-institute-technology
