One of the USC essay prompts is this:
Visions and Voices is a university-wide arts and humanities initiative that seeks to transform students perspectives through presentations and performances by top artists, writers, and scholars. Tell us about a creative project, performance or other work of yours and how it reflects your vision or voice.

Would it be OK if I just wrote about my love of one particular activity, and how it has taught me leadership skills, etc. ? I don't really have enough to write about one particular performance or work of mine...

I think they are looking for some creative activity of yours. So if the one activity that you love is creative (arts, music or something) and you have done a project or exhibition or something with it, then I think that would be Ok.

The feeling I get is that they want something more than just a normal extracurricular activity…I may be mistaken though, I chose a different prompt.

my particular activity is not mainstream at all. in fact i had to start a new club in my high school to promote it. can i write an essay about founding this club and the lessons i learned throughout this process?

I’m unsure because to me it seems that they want me to talk about a specific performance, piece of art, piece of writing etc. And i just don’t have enough to talk about any ONE work of mine, you know?

yeah i see, you want to talk about the activity in general, rathern than one specific project.
In that case, I’m really not too sure. Perhaps you could take the angle that the ‘creative project’ was starting the club at high school.

You could also use the ‘other work’ option so speak about starting the club etc.

I think you should be fine as long as you go with the angle that the club was the “other work.”
If you display your passion for the activity and tell the admission officers about yourself, I think you’ll be able to provide a unique angle on the essay topic, and they probably won’t even think about the fact that you didn’t answer it in a conventional way.

it’s really not a big deal… imo spending a lot of time on college essays is overrated. i guess it’s different for everyone but if you know you’re a competent writer, you don’t really need to spend that much time on a 1 page essay. i remember writing mine the night it was due lol.

I don’t think this is the best prompt for you…despite all the reassurances everyone’s given you so far, I really feel like the activity you want to talk about is too vague for that topic.

I know there were two other prompts…one about persistence and one I forgot about. Couldn’t you fit your essay into one of those two instead?

The thing is that I want to use my common app essay for my USC essay, and it fits the second prompt best. I really dont have time to write a solid essay with the time that is left, especially since exams are coming up.

So I guess it would be ok to use my common app essay for USC?
