AM I on the right track for Rice?

k thx lolz!

Any other advice?

calculus AB and BC in the same year? thats really redundant since in BC you basically go over AB, but i guess if thats what floats your boat, then sail on captain. and whats with with spanish 4 and 5, hope you have a fun senior year! wait till senioritis kicks in, youre gonna regret taking all those classes.

only 400+ hours? seems kinda low to me, but then again, youre the captain.

fyi...u can take either ab or bc exam, but not both at the same time. if u take bc, u get a subscore for ab (basically u get credit for both). there's nothing wrong with having 400+ hours...that's plentiful :)

bump..........

My school works a little bit differently so I suggest you ask first. AB is first and then you take BC the second semester.

Make sure to cultivate good relationships, because good letters of recommendation are key- some schools (I know MIT does), consider them as much as standardized test scores. So stop by your counsellor sometime and suck up, ask about her kids, etc. Act really interested in your math classes and ask questions, even though if you're bright they're probably boring as hell to you. Remember, the way to get places in this world is by pure, unabashed cynicism, so lay that on thick, too. Semi-kidding, of course.

Also, take testmasters- <a href="http://www.testmasters.com/sat/fulllengthcrs.asp?course=66&city=DFW&name=Dallas-Ft.Worth%5B/url%5D">http://www.testmasters.com/sat/fulllengthcrs.asp?course=66&city=DFW&name=Dallas-Ft.Worth</a><br>
it's really expensive ($1000), but it's awesome, and if you take it before the PSAT you can get national merit finalist, and cover the cost of it with a scholarship (even Ivies give alright national merit packages). In fact, just getting national merit finalist alone (in Texas, above a 214 on the PSAT- going from semifinalist to finalist is nearly guaranteed, unless you completely botch the application) irrespective of grades can get you in for free at many schools, including UT dallas, the university of oklahoma, and university of houston (I know, not great, but hey, it's free). Getting above a 1550 on the SAT pays about half your way in UT Austin Engineering, one of the best programs in the nation.

One thing I'd definitely recommend, especially if you're even slightly interested in space exploration, science, or engineering is the Texas High School Aerospace Scholars program: <a href="http://aerospacescholars.jsc.nasa.gov/HAS/index.cfm%5B/url%5D">http://aerospacescholars.jsc.nasa.gov/HAS/index.cfm</a>. You apply to it sometime during early junior year (I'm not sure- look into that), and getting accepted seems relatively easy. You then take a few lessons online, and NASA pays your way for a whole week at the Johnson space center (travel expenses and everything). It's a lot of fun and I'm sure it looks awesome on a resume.

One last modification (as you can tell, I'm seriously avoiding work):

Start on your college essays soon- at the very latest, summer after junior year. College aps will be utter hell during your senior year, and you might be like me. Even though writing is definitely one of my strong points, I could not produce even a mediocre college essay, because I was so stressed out and nervous (and I don't even usually get stressed out and nervous). So, read prompts of years past and write a few good generic essays that you can use when the prompts do come out. I know if anyone had told me to start (and finish) early I would have balked, but seriously- it is very important.

I believe the TEXAS PSAT cutoff was 216 last year, not 214.

yes, it is 216, our VA was 1 point short, poor him.

My school must prepare us well because this year there were 17 National Merit Finalists.

Wow, that's nuts. My class has six, and we're the one of the best classes my 10 year old high school has seen. Last year we had two.

Yeah, there are a lot of smart people at my school. If I had gone to the lesser school in this district my ranking would be like top ten, but at this school I'm expecting to be around #60 or so out of 690.

Yeah, I'm happy to go to my school district's lazy school (well, relatively low academic standards for a wealthy suburban school).

Umm, Texasmathwhiz, your not on the right track. I don't care how many APs you take or the connections you claim to have. The bottom line is that you got a 168 on your PSATs and thats way below Rice, even as a sophmore. You should be shot for calling your self a 'math whiz' when you only got a 60 in math on the PSAT. Geez.

Excuse me. Rice doesn't even care about your PSAT scores, SATs are for college admissions. Who told you I got a 60 in math, idiot, there are other combinations that would yield 168.

Please provide me a link with this information that supposedly tells you the average sophomore PSAT for Rice. If there isn't one, your comment carries nothing because it is speculation.

And you speak of the connections I "claim" to have. If I was going to claim connections I would have just said my parents both went to Cambridge and got doctorates and I was on a first name basis with the dean at Harvard.

What you've done is created a post that is supposed to make me feel bad, has no proof in any statements you made, and calls me a liar when you have no reason to. Also I don't see constructive criticism, I see rudeness, accusations, false information, and assumptions in that post. So therefore I will dismiss your comments as useless.

Ouch... That's gotta hurt.

haha, i could of summed all that up in TWO words, what a waste of precious typing.

I'm interested in what two words that would have been.

I can think of a lot of combinations.

Texasmathwhiz,
How am I giving false information? Here's your proof. You said you got a 60 on math yourself:

"I'm pretty decent with grammar, it's the reading. I got a 60 something in math and a 59 in the grammar stuff, and then like 49 critical reading."

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=33179%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=33179</a></p>

And yes, I know that no colleges actually see your PSAT scores but they more often then not dictate what you will get on your SATs. And a 168 means you probably wont do too hot on the SATs.

I'm not accusing you of anything, I'm just giving you my honest observations based on facts you have posted on this board.
