AM I on the right track for Rice?

Hey guys, I realize I was just wondering how my chances at Rice are right now.

Freshmen GPA: 3.5uw school didn't weight, no honors courses offered so all I had was Geometry H anyway.

Sophomore GPA: 3.85uw 4.44w. Taking/took PreAP Chemistry, PAP Geography, PAP English 2, PAP Algebra 2, AP Psychology.

Junior registered courses: AP Chemistry, AP US History, AP English 3, PreAP Physics, PreAP Spanish 3, PreAP Precal (Possibly AP Calc AB/BC if I can take PreCal in the summer at a college, AB and BC are one semester each.)

Senior courses expected: AP Biology, AP Physics, AP European History, AP English 4, AP Spanish 4, AP Spanish 5, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Economics.

ECs:
Habitat for Humanity, running for office next year.
Math Honor Society
Piano and guitar, performing on piano since age 4, guitar since age 12.

Community service: 40 hours so far at Christian Community Action and Beach cleanups with the surf club when I lived in California. I'm going to end up with like 400+ hours though.

So what do you guys think, am I on track for Rice, am I doing good, what can I improve on?

this seems really typical for an applicant that applies to a high selective college such as Rice. Academically, you are on the right track. EC...not really unless you are REALLY goog at math team or something. Why don't you search for summer internships or do something interesting such as learning butterfly species or something (one of my friends who had VERY mediocre scores got into Harvard cuz he knew ALL the butterfly species). I'm not saying do something as crazy like that but the adcom people might think you're a typical applicant if they only see you have tough courses in high school

At least I'm typical and not lacking, I guess. Thanks for the advice. Yeah I'm gonna brush up on my ECs, and I am really good at math. I didn't know much about what the school had to offer this year, so I didn't do that much. Next year I'm hoping to join NHS or EHS, or even Spanish Honor Society.

texasmathwhiz-youre possibly THE most irritating person on cc.
why do you do this on every board you go to? youre just in your sophomore year right now....relax.

yeah, those are good clubs to join. Take the sat and do well on it and you should be fine. Good course selections. What do you plan to major in?

I know not all colleges have it, but possibly Premedicine. Otherwise: Psychology, Biology, or Chemistry.

yeah, pretty good. Check out the Rice/Baylor program for medicine. Rice has premed though.

Alright I'll look at that. Is it like a transfer thing to Baylor med school, because that would be great. Baylor is top ranked for med schools.

As I've said to you before, I think Rice should be an early favorite for you. Go and visit as soon as you can, since you aren't too far away. See what you think of the "feel" and the size. Pre-med is excellent. Once you get your first "real" SAT scores, you will have a little better idea of what you should be doing.

Yeah I'm taking the SAT on March 12th but you can't totally count that one in less its a score worth keeping because I can take it again senior year.

Hey sorry for high-jacking this thread texasmathwiz..
but bluedaisy, how did your friend prove to the adcoms that he knew all the butterfly species? I` m just really curious about that!

Yeah how'd he do that? When I was 4 and we went to the airport a lot I memorized all the names of the buses that take people to the airport and stuff. Do you think that will aid my chances at selective schools lol?

These are very good stats/ECs for Rice, and it's amazing that you're a soph and you've done so much.

Wow, thanks, most people are kinda negative about my stats for some reason.

Is there anything I could improve on. I'm assuming I could get in some more ECs. My freshmen grades sucked so I'm not sure I qualify for NHS this year, but I'm gonna see about EHS and even NHS. I don't qualify for Spanish HS because you have to have A's 3 semesters in a row and I've only got them one so far because I had them first semester of freshmen year, then I got a B, and then a B first semester sophomore year and an A second semester. I can only qualify for that senior year now so probably screw it.

yeah, try not to get B's. Too many can kill your chances. Take hard courses. get high SAT/ii scores. and get involved in some EC's that you like (sports, journalism, instruments, whatever) and get a leadership position in it.

The thing with leadership positions is that I'm new ya know. I'm in Habitat for Humanity and I've been a strong participating member and I'd like to run for Treasurer and plan to. The thing is, I only know three people in the club, two I've confirmed will vote for me. The club has 90 members, 15 who will probably show up and vote, so I've got 20 percent probably, but that's not enough.

don
t worry, you always have junior and senior year to get leadership positions. just work hard and get more people to notice you!! can you do something with your piano/guitar? you
ve been doing them for quite a while and you must be good at it, see if you can do something with that! be creative!!

japstudent12 : yeah they were really suspicious so they got this biology professor to TEST him during interviews. Man, talk about NOT LYING about something as seious as that. So once he passed, they were impressed

Make friends in the clubs. Act really interested in the really boring kids, who will definitely vote for you. Take note of the influential members, and win their support, bring along the support of all their followers. Never lay it on too thin.

Sorry, I'm reading a biography of LBJ. What a jerkass.

I'm now considering Rice slightly more than I did before. Especially if some of you are going there now.

This is the best feedback I've gotten since I came to CC.
