Am I on the right track?

Hey, this is one of my first threads, but I really need help. So, attending Columbia University has been a dream of mine for two years already. I just LOVE Columbia. The campus is beautiful, I love how it is pretty much located in the heart of New York City, the Core Curriculum is awesome, and, well, yeahh... But, I'm just wondering if I am on the right track now. I'm only a sophomore right now, but it's just really bothering me.

Well, here's my academic record:

8th Grade:
English: 97
Algebra 1: 92
Physical Science: 96
US History: 96
Beginners French: 95
P.E.: 91
Humanities: 92
Creative Writing: 95

9th Grade:
English 97
Geometry 1 semester: 99
Algebra 2 1 semester: 92
World History: 100 for most of the year
Earth Science: 100-97 most of the year
French: I was in Intermidiate French and received a 67, so I moved to Beginners French and got a 99% --> how bad will this look, even if I was able to keep a 94% average while having a 67% in French?
Haitian History (since I lived in Haiti): 92 for most of the year, but I did get a 83 one sememster
Health/PE: 99 or 98%

10th Grade:
Psychology: 100-102
Statistics: 88, but got it up to 94
Spanish: 96-98 throughout the year
English: 96-98 throughout the year
World History 2: 100
PE: 96
Economics: 95
Sociology: went from a 99 to a 92, but I'm planning on raising it again
Geometry: 97
Algebra 2: haven't gotten my grade yet
Art Studio: 94
Have maintained an average of 96-97 throughout the year (4.0 right now).

(if you're wondering why I took both Geometry and Algebra 2 in one school year again, it's because I didn't gain full credit in my old school so I had to re-take it).

Extra Curriculars/Resumee:

In 9th grade, I was a member of my previous school's Model United Nations club, in which we traveled to Champaign, Illinois to attend a conference at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. In 9th grade I was Class President. I was also a member of the Interact Program, as part of the Rotary Club. In 9th grade, 3 of my short stories were published on Teen Ink (teenink.com). During summer 2008, I attended the New York Film Academy for a 1 week Digital Filmmaking course.

I am currently a member of my school’s Model United Nations club, in which we attended a conference at Columbia University in New York. I am also a member of JSA (Junior States of America). I am a member, as well as the treasurer, of my current school's magazine, the Kaleidoscope. I am also currently a Class Senator. I am a member of the National Honor's Society. I am taking French classes after school, as well as private tennis lessons and weekly baseball practice. On September, I was lucky enough to have a chance to be involved in a foreign exchange program, where I visited my school's sister school in Hyannis, Massachusetts for a week. I am also a member of a non-profitable charity organization that helps physically disabled children and the elderly. I am the co-founder/vice-president of the film club at my current school, and I am also the founder/president of the Earth Club (Earth Day was amazing; we had so many activities going on!) This summer, I plan to partake in the summer hire program in the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. I am also planning on taking a Conceptual Chemistry course, as well as tennis lessons and french lessons.

Awards and Special Recognition:

In 10th grade, I was awarded with a High Honor Roll status three semesters in a row, and hopefully one more semester before school ends.
In 10th grade, I was given an award for following our school's pillars of character (awarded as being disciplined and humble).
In 10th grade, I was given an award for never being late to class.
In 9th grade, my partner and I won an award for having the best science fair project in our grade (I did most of the work :P)
In 9th grade, I received a certificate of excellence in the field of English.
In 9th grade, I received an excellence award for Earth Science.
In 9th grade, I received an award of excellence in the field of World History 1.
In 9th grade, I also received an award recognizing my placement as Class President.
In 8th grade, I received an excellence award in Creative Writing.
In 8th grade, I received an excellence award for Physical Science.
In 8th grade, I received an excellence award for humanities.
In 8th grade, I received an award for my excellent work in French.

Now, I don't know if this looks good, or makes me look more unique. But, since my dad works for the State Department, we move around A LOT! I was born in El Salvador (have dual citizenship), where we lived for a while, then we moved to Nicaragua, then Nigeria, then Paraguay, then Bolivia, then Haiti, and now I'm living in Honduras. PS. I hate moving! I'm actually going to a boarding school close to Boston, St. Mark's school, which is considered to be a pretty prestigious school (with a pretty low acceptance rate).

I have one more question, how bad will my French grade look when Im applying??

I forgot a few more things. In 6th and 7th grade, I learned how to play the baritone and I was in the school band. I also played a baseball from 4th to 7th grade. Oh, and I am interested in photography and film, as hobbies though.

As for the courses I'll be taking next year, I'm planning on taking AP Spanish Language and AP US History. Then, during my senior year, I'll try taking AP Physics, AP English Language, and AP Art History.

And, when I took the PSAT last year, I received a 156 (which would be converted to a 1560 on the SAT). I realize this score is horrible, but it's been 7 months since I last took it, and every Wednesday there is an SAT Prep Group that meets, so hopefully I'll raise my score by the time I take the actual SAT.

Please helpppp!!! I’ve already got several views…pleasee

there is just way too much information on here.

but as for your PSAT - really gotta bump it up for the real test, regardless of your socecon background. its not as if there is some magic number you need to hit, but columbia very rarely takes students around where your SAT would be.

hahaha, yeah, I know, I tried to put as much information as I could…sorry.

But, admissionsgeek, thanks. I’m aware that I have to raise that score. Thanks.

58 views and only one reply?!?! I’d really appreciate the help.

BUMP^^

Barely skimmed your thread, but what I can say is your P/SAT is way too low. You need at least a 2200 to be competitive. Work on getting recognition during junior year because everything you listed prior to freshman year has no bearing on college admissions. School awards like “excellence in __ subject” really don’t count for much when many of your competitors are getting national or even international recognition.

^ Did a quick skim as well. With a 156 PSAT and most likely a sub 2000 SAT, your chances are very, very slim.

Thanks.

Tristan101, I completely understand. I’m going to try to increase the score (and well, I did take it 7 months ago, so I’m pretty sure I have improved in some way or another, and I still have about a year and a half to get the score up to around a 2100 SAT-wise). But thanks. And as for national recognition, I do have an international tennis competition where several tennis players from around central america are competing, if that counts for anything :D

And Jersey13, yeah, I understand. Thanks.

And, I know colleges don’t see your grades and anything else prior to high school, but I figured I should just post it anyways
