I swore that I would never make a ‘Chance me’ thread. However, I felt that external input would always be beneficial. So, here I am :-p

I’m from India and I go to an extremely competitive school in a metropolitan city. I will be applying to the class of 2020 unless some miracle happens on the Thiel Fellowship front. Please note that a few ECs are a work in progress and I have marked the awards/positions that I am pretty sure of getting with an asterix *. I’ll keep the post void of specifics so that I can maintain my identity. I might come off as paranoid but I just need honest feedback. I know that I am not the bestc applicant and I am looking for feedback to improve whatever I can.

Some things to note: I shifted schools after 10th, the new school has no concept of clubs and such. They are virtually non-existent at many schools in my country barring the international schools. I’ll be applying to MIT, Stanford, Harvard (1st choice), Princeton, Columbia, Caltech, UChicago, UPenn (M&T program), Brown, UC Berkeley and Yale along with a few other safeties. I want to major in CS/Applied Math. I DO NOT NEED AID AT ALL.

I’m sorry if the following isn’t posted in the right format. Thanks in advance!

Objective:

  1. SAT I (breakdown): 2370 (790 CR, 780 W, 800 M)
  2. SAT II: 800 Physics, 800 Math 2
  3. Grades: We follow a percentage system: 9th - 85%, 10th - 93%, 11th - 91%, 12th mid - 94%* (The grading in my school is incredibly harsh and the class average in 9th was 62%, 74% in 10th, 61% in 11th)
  4. Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 9th: 2/380, 10th: 10/380, 11th: 15/350, 12: 10/350* (Note: I shifted schools after 10th grade)
  5. Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Published research in peer reviewed journals x2, patent, Regional Math Olympiad Qualifier (akin to the AIME; Top 30 in state), IOLTC, IOITC* (I’m pretty sure about the national olympiad for IOI), Top-40 internationally at a semi-major international CS competition (3rd in zone). A national award for the work that received patent.

Subjective:

  1. Extracurriculars: Scientific Research (10th, 11th, 12th), Football & Basketball (7th - 10th grade; captain in 10th; played up to district level), Science Awareness Programs, Open Source Contribution, Video Game Development, Developed my own MOOC.
  1. Job/Work Experience: Paid internship at the Indian Institute of Science (5th month right now)
  2. Volunteer/Community service: I developed a MOOC for poor students wishing to study for competitive examinations. Scientific awareness through writings in news papers?
  3. Summer Activities: Research, Internship at IISc, coding random stuff and preparing for the olympiads. A research camp this summer if I get lucky.
  4. Essays: I'm not the one that should comment on them.
  5. Additional Rec: 1x from Harvard Med School Prof. 1 from a Prof at a national science research institute. He was a associate prof at UC Berkeley, UChicago and Caltech and he did his PhD at Harvard. Another one from a MIT prof.

Other
NO AID AND ORM!

A few things such as Google Science Fair and ISEF this year might work out. But they are so unpredictable that I’m leaving them out. Thanks for helping me out! Be sure to post a link to your page so that I can provide you feedback too! Sorry for any typos!

Yes, you are on track. SAT scores are there, but even though your school may be harsh, your UW GPA is definitely not up to par (Amazing GPA but not for schools like Harvard). Its about a 3.7. Still give it a shot though.

I don’t even want to apply anymore after seeing your stats. Can you pleaeese not apply to uchicago?I really wanna go there, and your stats are better than mine in every SINGLE way . (I was joking,totally apply to uchicago.they have a great math department).I saw on some thread that you conducted mathematical research at a top 5 uni with a PhD candidate.Can you tell me more about it? I’m really interested in anything related to math.And what about this semi major international cs competition? Video game development?dude,you’re really cool.I’m guessing you’re not in CBSE.(I am)(we have cgpas in ninth and tenth).about the only thing I have over you is my 800 in CR(lol,only 10 points difference though).I didn’t even get an 800 in maths!(I thought every Indian gets at least that). I only got a 780.(messed up a circles question,I guess). I guess I will have to give the jee main and bitsat and try for IIIT Hyderabad or BITs(if I even get that).NO college would select me over you(especially seeing I need FULL tuition scholarships to even attend).College admissions aside,you sound like a pretty awesome person.Congratulations for all your achievements.Any tips for SAT writing?(how’d you get a 780?). I live in Gujarat too(I’m a girl studying in ABPS kesrol).

Hey musicprincess33 and mumbai98, I want to major in Computer science engineering too with a technology and management minor. I am aiming at GA Tech though. It is no.7 public university in the United States and it is near my house. I studied my 9th and 10th grades in India too (CBSE). The only problem we all have in common (as far as I have read in your threads) is that we don’t have non- academic ECs. Anyways, I finished my 11th grade right now and I will be class of 2020. But, you mentioned that you finished your 12th grade. How come you will be in class of 2020?

@musicprincess33 Haha. Thanks for reviving an old thread. Anyway, it is always good to get some opinions. I’m kind of busy at the moment but I will definitely get back to you with the answers to all your questions through PM. I’m pretty sure that there are lots of good colleges that will accept you. There are a few changes in my stats, but they kind of overcompensate for the 1 or 2 things that did not work out :smiley: and a few (surprisingly good) changes in my academics.

@CHCollege123 I will be appearing for the 12th grade board exams next year. I too am in the 12th grade right now. As far as non-academic ECs are concerned, I have a few but its just that revealing them might allow people to search for me by doing a quick google search. I don’t want that.
