Am I putting up a good fight for the Irish?

Hey guys, first time poster, yessss. Neways, I was just wondering about my chances for admission to Notre Dame. I know it's a really selective college so I was wondering if I got what it takes. I go to a relatively competitive public high school in Ohio. I will be applying Regular Decision. Here are the stats...

Numbers:
GPA: 4.85 weighted, 4.0 unweighted (all A's)
Rank: 5/300ish, top 2%
Toughest courseload available

Senior Year: AP French, AP Gov, AP Physics, AP Calc, AP AP English
SAT: 700M, 730V, 720W with 10/12 essay (2150 total, 1430 M+V)
PSAT National Merit Commended (score: 213)

ECs:
Tennis: JV 9,10,11; Varsity 12
Basketball: JV 9,10; Varsity 12
School Newspaper (9-12); Sports Editor (11-12)
Key Club (Chairman of various activities)
School television station: videocamera man and announcer
French Club
NHS, high honor roll, all that fun stuff

Other/"hooks":
Summer Internship at Cleveland Clinic Hospital - competitive program, fulltime, 9 weeks, completed a research project there which improved clinical mammography rates, will be sending a "Research Abstract"

Regional winner and National Finalist in an Essay Contest sponsored by Society of Plastics Engineers, "The Wonder of Plastics."

Research at Case Western Reserve University - in Electromyography Lab (studying neurological disorders and such)

Acoustic Guitar - I'm no prodigy but have been playing for a couple years and have been taking some professional lessons and will send a "Music CD" which is rather decent

And thats about it. Teacher reccomendations are extremely good (also, I have an excellent supplemental reccomendation from my mentor during my summer internship). Essays are quite good as well. What do you guys think? Is it very detrimental that I went to a public high school, compared to say, St. Ignatius? Does ND give out merit scholarships? How are the St. Mary's College girls? Obviously I'm pre-med so how's the program there in your opinion?

I think you have a very good shot at ND, I really do. I don't think that the public school will hurt you just because a lot of people here went to public school. I do think going to Catholic school may help slightly but really not much; it is what you do and you did quite a bit in high school and have proven a lot. ND does not give out merit scholarships, sorry to say, but are very good with need-based scholarships. I like St. Mary's girls, though they do very, but most are nice....not sure what you are looking for there. Pre-med out here is very very strong and I highly recommend it.

If you want merit aid and don't mind the midwest, look at Creighton University. Great pre-med program and tons of merit aid. If you have any interest in it, let me know as I transferred to ND from Creighton and was pre-med at Creighton so I know the program at least a bit. Good luck!

I think you have a good shot. I'm apply RD too but my scores are a lower.. You said you were having your research mentor write a supplement?? I did an intership over the summer too and i wanted to have my boss write something but i thought they only wanted teacher recs. Does that count as a rec letter?

-my mom went to Saint Mary's..ha.. but im only applying to nd

Good luck and could you tell me about the rec's. thanks

I think you're in. Pretty impressive list.

FWIW, I think you should look at St. Mary's. I so would have gone to SMC when I was rejected if I was a girl (as it was I almost went to Holy Cross even because I was so desperate to get out here). It is a solid school and the more time I am out here the more respect I have for it. Also, they get a lot of privilages (many would say way too many) that make them almost like ND students. It is something to look into I think; it is a good school. Just FWIW however.

i have nothing new to say but to agree

I think you have a great shot. Your scores are solid, and your rank is excellent. You also have strong extracurriculars. There are no guarantees with a school like ND, though, so have safeties that you love. Good luck! :)

You definatly have a good chance to get in. My brother was admitted in 2003 with a 1420 SAT and 33 ACT ranked 6th in his class and had similar EC's.

As far as merit based scholarships, ND offers no academic based scholarships at all.

The pre-med program at ND is outstanding and ND pre-med graduates have a pretty high acceptance rate into the top medical schools.

As far as the public/private high school, I don't really know but I suspect that ND looks at public and private high schools equally as long as you are in AP or IB courses (which you are).
