Am I Really That Crazy?

So I'm new on College Confidential (my friend told me this was a great site) and I've recently come under ridicule from my friends. I was fortunate enough to be accepted to Yale EA, but I, after visiting Penn again, realize that I would probably be happier at Penn (of course, i still need to be accepted and by no means am i assuming i could get in). My friends think I'm a complete nut for wanting to go to Penn over Yale, but I would genuinely like to hear the opinion of others. Thanks guys.

You should go wherever you feel the happiest. Remember that ‘Yale’ and ‘Harvard,’ etc, are just names. Yes, you might not follow other people’s expectations but this in turn is commendable because you are seeing beyond this “Yale” brand.

Agreed. Fit is key. One of my best friends is at Yale, and she feels miserable there. Over here, I know two people that are just as unhappy and are transferring out come next semester. So give it some thought and I’m sure you’ll make the right decision and be part of the happy majority wherever you end up :)

what exactly do you intend to study? What do you hope to get out of college? What are your long-term goals?

I’m, as of right now, split between eventually wanting to go into Law or Finance. I have no real interest to study solely business in college, but I can see a benefit to having Wharton there (in case I would want to take a few classes there or transfer). I would like to have a nice broad liberal education, and I know Yale might do a better job at giving me that, but I liked the kind of kids at Penn and the general atmosphere.

Trust me – fit is more important than name.

If we are (falsely) going to assume Yale is the better institute, you are in a better position to pursue your later ambitions because the caliber of student at Penn would be (presumably) lower. In other words, you’ll stand out more and will have a higher GPA. This goes for both Finance (having firms come to campus / pre-professional atmosphere) and Law (higher GPA) If (and rather likely) this assumption is incorrect, then fit overrules because all else is equal.

Under the Button’s take:

[That’s Exactly Why I Didn’t Choose Yale | Under the Button](http://underthebutton.com/2010/01/thats-exactly-why-i-didnt-choose-yale/)

lmao! I’m sort of glad I got rejected.

What’s wrong with that video? I personally thought it was rather cute, and made me like Yale a bit more.

i thought it was actually pretty good even though i somewhat dislike yale (they don’t have my major)

I went to Penn for undergrad and am at Yale for grad school and have an undergrad sitting next to me agreeing with me. You will be happy where-ever you go but there are differences. I’ll list a few:

1- Residential colleges at Yale are big thing, at Penn you don’t really have that kind of built in residential communities- although people tend to make their own

2- Same gender housing at Yale is still in existence and its taking a while to get rid of it. At Penn you can room with anyone you choose starting sophmore year.

3- Yale has better food, although I haven’t eaten in Penn’s dining halls in a while so that may have changed.

4- If you’re gay, Penn is the better place because they have their own center, which they don’t have at Yale. This means that there is more institutional support for LGBT people at Penn, although Yale does have a great LGBT community.

5- If you like drama or singing, Yale is better. You’ll have more audience and YSD (Yale School of Drama) is awesome. (Sorry, Penn. I know it’s a bummer)

6- This is kinda lame but I personally think the gym at Penn is nicer because its newer, but the gym at Yale has 2 pools and is located in a cathedral.

7- Libraries are roughly the same, except that Penn has a 24 hour library which is amazing, whereas Yale has less hours (especially over the weekend).

In other words, it basically depends what you’re into. You can PM me if you want to figure out which would be a better fit for you, but honestly I think you’ll be happy in both places.

Short addition to Penn2007:

Penn does have a new company handling dining this year, and from what I heard from sophomores and above, dining has improved by leaps and bounds. I’m a freshman, and I think it suits me just fine. The company is Bon Apetit.

Oh BRAVO! We had Aramark when I was there. It was horrible.
