Am I supposed to report Social Security Benefits?

Both of my parents are disabled and therefore they receive Social Security Benefits monthly. Because my parents receive these benefits, I receive money as well. I don't know if any of these benefits are taxed, nor do I know if I am supposed to report this on the FAFSA or CSS Profile.

When the forms asks for my parents' wages, am I supposed to add in their social security benefits? Because they don't receive wages or W-2 forms anymore....

I'm just very confused.

On the FAFSA it falls under “Other Untaxed Income or Benefits.” Your parents’ amounts go in the parents’ section, and whatever is paid in your name goes in the student’s section.

Untaxed Social Security benefits are NOT reported. Taxed benefits will be picked up in the adjusted income line. See FAFSA instructions:
i. Other untaxed income and benefits. Enter untaxed income or benefits not
reported in items 45a through 45h, such as worker’s compensation or disability
benefits.

Don’t include student aid, earned income credit, additional child tax credit,
welfare payments, untaxed Social Security benefits, Supplemental Security
Income, Workforce Investment Act educational benefits, on-base military housing
or a military housing allowance, combat pay (if you are not a tax filer), benefits
from flexible spending arrangements (for example, cafeteria plans), foreign
income exclusion or credit for federal tax on special fuels.

Agree…do not report any untaxed SS benefits! This was a change that went into effect last year.
