Hey! I’m a current freshmen(will be a sophomore in 2019-2020 year) and I just wanted you’ guys imput on my current schedule for next year, as I don’t really feel confident I’m taking the right classes.
Pre-Ap English 2(Pre-ap is what honors is called at our school)
Pre-Ap Precal
AP Physics 1(alg-based)
AP Chem
AP Comp Sci A
AP Capstone Seminar
AP World History
I don’t completely feel comfortable taking 5 APs(I only took one this year and felt like I had to work pretty hard to do well on the exam), but don’t know what else I could take instead.
Take an art, music or some other elective class in place of capstone. Remove one of the science classes and swap in a foreign language class. Don’t overdo it. Do you have honor class options?
@scubadive I would take something like a foreign language class, but this year I’ve taken Spanish 3 Pre-Ap and have got a really bad teacher so I really don’t think I can do well in AP Spanish 4. I’m trying not to over do it, but I would like to take weighted classes which means that I can’t really take most of the electives and any music classes.
Btw: My school doesn’t have too many courses bc it’s a new school (Second year)
Pre-Ap = Honors at my school
Hey we are in a similar situation! I took an AP this year (Calc AB) and I also plan to take 5 next year.
Yea feels like a big jump lol
Going from 1 AP to 3 APs will already be a big jump. Don’t overdo it. There’s no upside to it.
(It won’t “impress colleges”, they’ll just think you didn’t think it through… which is not a positive).
Remove AP Chem and save it for junior or senior year. (Have you taken pre-AP Chemistry already?) Only take one AP lab science a year.
Try to take Spanish 4. You really need to continue your foreign language sophomore year.
Choose between AP Capstone and AP CS. Don’t take both.
What are Pre-AP or non-weighted classes offered at your school? You CAN take some unweighted classes, and music/art is recommended (even required for California schools).
@MYOS1634 I’ve taken Orchestra this year, and Pre-AP Classes are weighted at the same level as AP, so I tried to find other classes for those, but my school doesn’t really offer anymore.
I’ve already taken Chem Pre-AP(Skipped 8th grade science so I could take Bio in eight.)
Also, I’m trying to get all 6 sciences completed(2 levels for each core science).
- Physics 1 AP
- Physics 2 AP
- Chem Pre-AP
- Chem AP
- Bio Pre-AP
- Bio AP
This means that I have to double up sometime, and I thought sophomore year would be better than another year.
As for Capstone Vs AP Cs, I chose to take both because I plan to take an independant study of CS next year(heard it was really easy and thought it’d look good) and capstone bc I wanted an AP that didn’t have an exam with the other APs, which would make it easier for me to get a better score.
Choose. Sounds like AP CS is more interesting to you and has more potential, so don’t take AP Capstone.
You have to prioritize - the “everything but the kitchen sink” approach to AP choice is NOT valued by highly selective colleges that’ll also evaluate your ability to make reasonable choices.
If you have no specific interest, take Shop or Culinary Arts, as those will give you skills you’ll value your whole like and will introduce you to students who may not be in many of your classes.
