Am I the only one who finds Stanford and Duke very similar?

1) They're both very Greek centered.

2) They're very prestigious, everyone knows about them. They're both non-Ivy league, but Ivy league leveled.

3) Very sports oriented, although Stanford seems a bit more academic and Duke a bit more sporty.

4) Both actually have interesting contrasts. Stanford = Red and white; Duke = Blue and white. A similar taste in output

5) Neither are elitist as the stereotypical Ivy League is portrayed. They both have good weather.

I don't know, but for some reason, I find them very similar with each other.

Ya, I have noticed the same thing but minus the greek.

At the international level, Stanford is much more recognized than Duke (at least in Asia). No one knows about Duke here.

I mostly agree with you, but also don’t have the impression that Stanford is Greek-centered.

Like Stanford, Duke has a stong reputation in the sciences, though Stanford more for IT and engineering, and Duke more for biology and pre-med.

They both have a symbiotic relationship with industry; Stanford’s got Silicon Valley, and Duke has the Research Triangle.

They both have huge, wooded campuses.

STANFORD >>> Duke

Duke students agree:

I don’t believe Duke compares to Stanford in math & science.

For Biology:

Stanford = #1
Duke = #12

For Chemistry:

Stanford = #1
Duke = #43

For Physics:

Stanford = #1
Duke = #29

For Earth Sciences:

Stanford = #2
Duke = #34

For Computer Science:

Duke = #20

For Math:

@ OP. Yes. Yes you are.

I have also noticed the same thing. Stanford’s always been my dream school, but living so close to Duke has allowed me to see that the two schools are very similar to each other. Apart from overall academics and prestige, I think the biggest difference between the two might be the east coast/west coast vibe.

I’d also add that both campuses seem really laid back/chill and relaxed.

iamtbh forgot to mention that Duke is number 2 in the nation for BME

Actually, Duke is #4, but who’s counting? And thanks for reminding me, I also “forgot” to mention the following engineering specialties:

Aerospace / Aeronautical / Astronautical

Stanford = #3
Duke = unranked

Chemical

Stanford = #5
Duke = unranked

Civil

Stanford = #3
Duke = unranked

Electrical / Electronic / Communications

Stanford = #2
Duke = unranked

Environmental / Environmental Health

Stanford = #1
Duke = unranked

Industrial / Manufacturing

Stanford = #4

Materials

Stanford = #5

I don’t like to feed the ■■■■■■ but I think it’s important to point out that Duke doesn’t even have half of the engineering majors that the above poster mentioned. Duke only offers BME, ECE, ME and CE so that’s why it’s unranked in all of those areas.

To add on to the similar trends,

Both schools have the “young” vibe and the students and administrations are very entrepreneurial, flexible in nature and open to the idea of change.

Okay, so I did a quick check of your post history. You’re probably the last CC poster who should accuse anyone else of “■■■■■■■■.”

Hence the problem.

It’s unranked in the areas (except for BME) it offers as well.

There’s no need to start a Duke vs. Stanford argument. The point of this thread was to see if people could see the similarities the two universities share. Both are great schools.

iamtbh, I was just pointing out a mistake you made. Nice try spinning those engineering statistics.

Here’s more “spin.”

For engineering:

Stanford = #2
Duke = #33

in duke’s defense, they should be compared at the undergrad level. these rankings being thrown out involve stanford’s graduate programs (which i dont think anyone doubts are probably better)

Well…I’m not too sure if its wise to use rankings like that.
I mean Stanford’s engineering department is huge. Duke’s is small, hence they don’t have a huge research output like Stanford does.
Duke doesn’t want to offer majors like “Aeronautical E” or “Chemical E” because Duke knows its not going to do well in that.
Duke does well in whatever it does. Top class.

I think its not smart to compare two completely different engineering departments.

In this respect of engineering, Duke and Stanford are different. How about med, business, and law?

Well, if Stanford is full of people like iamtbh, that really dissuades me from attending.

Just fighting fire with fire. Go to the Duke forums and see for yourself.
