AMA: LaunchX (MIT Launch) '17 alum

@“Prestigious Nerd” don’t be scared. I thought I was under-qualified, I didn’t have any amazing things I’d done. I think it’s really just how you present yourself. It’s not easier or harder, it’s just how complete your resume or application can be at the time of application. In my session, it was a about half rising seniors. I honestly didn’t think I would get in after I saw the same stats you see now. There is no specific profile to fit, they won’t discount you because you are younger, they won’t give kudos because you are older. It’s really just how you compare to other applicants and how well they think you’ll fit the program.

(There were about five or six rising sophomores in my session, just for reference though. There were also those who had graduated already and were off to college after.)

@“Prestigious Nerd” also on another note, from just what you had said previously, you have done more than I did at the time of my app. Don’t be too worried. I felt like an imposter while I was there. I think a lot of us did.

@“Prestigious Nerd” make sure you turn in your application on time with all attachments! I think the deadline is approaching pretty soon. As long as your video shows effort you should be fine. Being a senior may give you some edge in some facet of application but I can’t speak for sure.

@Abeyance @0x0001 My application was submitted and I thought my video was pretty good for the most part (just not outstanding). Should I expect to get an interview and if I don’t get one, does that imply rejection?

Also, did most people have a hook when you were there? Would you say the people with the very impressive credentials are for the most part the exception or the rule?

@“Prestigious Nerd” Some may get an interview, it is considered to be the second stage of the application process. I’m not sure if they interview everyone, all I know is that I was interviewed. I enjoyed my interview.

Everybody had a skill, it isn’t one way or the other. Don’t worry about other people honestly, it won’t help or change anything. I don’t think it’s really the credentials that matter, but how you present yourself.

@0x0001 How much freedom did you have when you were there? I am a competitive athlete so I need to find a gym while I am there at least once every day. Was the food situation tough + expensive? How selective is it? Was the selectivity transparent while you were there? Did you really feel like everyone there was super impressive? I am a high school senior that was recruited to play for an ivy league school. Not sure if I am into that school yet but I just want to make sure it is the right program for me and that I will get a lot out of it

@Abeyance I submitted mine on Feb 20 and still haven’t gotten an interview request yet. Should I still expect one?

@HopefulDesi Though I’m not sure what exactly is the date to expect results back, I would say yes-- there is still time to get one. Less than a month has passed, I doubt they’d be that fast at reviewing everyone, and making all the decisions.

@CafeKid2018 I am also an athlete, and I found it quite easy to get exercise in, maybe not everyday, but most.

I am a cheap person in general, so I spent very little money on food, but kids who didn’t know how to cook spent hundreds a week on food, or much more than I believe I did.

It had about a 12% acceptance rate last year, but I’m unsure now that they’ve expanded past MIT.

I’m unsure what you mean by “selectively transparent” but if you clarify I might be able to answer.

There were a lot of well qualified, interesting and intelligent people there.

Hello! I was wondering when you received the email for an interview?

@Abeyance I just checked the portal today and it says I was unassigned from Hunter Colos on March 14. What does this mean?

And my video got views from Massachusetts in the past 28 days. Should I be concerned if I haven’t heard back at this point?

@HopefulDesi Just to clarify a common misconception-- getting a view from MA means nothing. The people who review apps aren’t just from MA, most actually aren’t.

That name is probably one of the reviewers who just checked that they had finished reviewing your application.

@stuyda I applied early last year, so I received mine maybe a month or slightly more after submission, but many didn’t get theirs until further in, I was one of the first.

@Abeyance thank you for your reply!

Just got my interview!
Are there any tips to better prepare myself? Are the questions pretty general or they are pretty specific on your EC?
Thanks for replying!

Hi I have a question that does an interview necessary for admission? I was waitlisted last year and I haven’t received any interview invitations this year, which makes mr pretty anxious cuz I really want to attend this program. Thank you!
