Amatuer Research?

Hi,

Ever since a couple of years ago, Goldbach's conjecture has really taken my interest. Though I'm not a mathematician, I've always been interested in the research of the field and even did some of my own.

My question is...

While I may not have a clear answer to the conjecture (obviously), do you think that sending in an amatuer research paper on the topic as a supplement to colleges is a good idea? I mean, it's not a formal activity that the schools keeps records of, like say, model u.n., but it takes up just as much, if not more time. I've shown a lot of dedication to this "activity", so it makes me wonder whether colleges would appreciate it?

Thanks in advance

Sending it doesn’t mean it will be read. Nor that any reader will necessarily be impressed. The usual value in outside research is when the kid is plugging into a project or a team. Then assumptions can be made about vision, worthiness, responsibilities and performance. I’d say, have your hs math teacher read it- then, in the LoR, he or she can write glowingly about your interest, commitment and intellect.
