As a freshman, I will be taking the AMC 10 in February, and I really want to qualify for the AIME (If I qualify, I’m shooting for 5+ on the AIME)
My practice AMC 10 scores are usually around 96 (highest 121.5) and my practice AIME scores 3-4 (highest 6).
I have been practicing using past tests on AoPS Wiki and Alcumus on AoPS (yes, I do have an AoPS account, same username except its fidgetboss_4000)
Although I made a 35 on the math portion of the ACT, I suck at competitive math and making AIME given the mere 3-4 weeks before the AMC 10 is kind of a stretch for me.
Any tips for studying for an AMC 10 low-scorer?
I would say I’m good at solving the simpler problems, but I don’t know some formulas that are necessary for the AMC 10 (esp. higher algebra and geometry formulas and techniques like Vieta’s, coordinate bashing, and stuff like that).
I love these types of questions! Here’s just some background infor: I have qualified for AIME 5 years in a row and have made USAJMO and USAMO from 9th - 11th grade.
Highest AMC 10 score: 144 (that damn last problem …)
Highest AMC 12 score: I forget but I know it’s within 120 - 130
Highest AIME Score: 11
USAJMO and USAMO: i hate my scores, not even posting ( i decided not to push for MOP because I simply do not have enough time to do additional practice)
Tips:
The best way for preparing is honestly grinding through all the past papers. At my peak, I was able to do every single one of the AMC past papers without messing up once. However, this took about 1000 hours in total along with additional time I spent just randomly doing math problems online. Another way I was able to raise scores was doing problems from HMMT, CHMMC, SMT, and BMT. As for formulas, I would recommend taking an AoPS class on AMC10, which will teach you all the necessary theorems and such.
Overall, I wouldn’t stress about making AIME this year. Instead, just focus on training yourself and make USAJMO next year. Trust me, the pay off will be much greater
First off, if you already have an account at AoPS, I really don’t think you’ll get better advice here.
Read Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, take previous tests, etc. They aren’t really something you can cram for in 3-4 weeks. The Number Theory/Counting courses cover topics typically not covered in school, and the AMC 10/12 prep courses can provide some structure to your efforts, though they are all just based on previous tests. If you have the drive/initiative, I’d pass on the classes and just focus on V1/2 and old tests, including those mentioned above.
is there any way to get scores transferred. I took the amc 10b at a different school because mine wasnt registered as a hosting school on the website. I just found that apparently my school is hosting it…if i had done it in it my school then I would have been first but am definitely no where near first in the school that i did take it at. I was hoping that I could get my score transferred or something idkkk? any suggestions??
My kids who have been into competitive math for several years are now enjoying teaching and helping other kids. They taught an AMC 8 preparation class earlier which got a great response. They are now teaching AMC 10/12 preparation class
They will be covering some important topics like:
* Polynomials
* Probability and Expected Value
* Modular Arithmetic
* Diophantine Equations
* Power of a Point
* …and more
