All i can say is, for me, getting AIME is a piece of cake. doing higher level math for me however, is time comsuming and hurts my brain.

even [getting qualified] for the USAMO is no where near the amount of effort needed for even like something simple as AP calc BC.

but that's just me. it's opposite for most people

XD, the opposite is definitely true for me! I beasted calc BC (granted, with a fair bit of studying), but I only just barely qualified for the AIME.

I said, "This past year's USAMO winners are going to schools like Harvard, Princeton, Caltech, and MIT." =p

At any rate, I still think that's a testament to the caliber of those who qualify for USAMO. I don't think it's so much USAMO that gets them into HYPS, etc. -- they're probably already pretty awesome, and their awesomeness got them to USAMO. It also got them into HYPS, etc. =)

He's now in Princeton. I can only tell you that he's the smartest person I've met. He always wins 1st place in math competitions. What's even more amazing is that he completes the test in like 5 minutes (no kidding) and still manages to get a perfect score, while other competitors need the full time of 30 minutes.

well of course, he's a USAMO WINNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oops...sorry...gotta read more carefully ^__^

but then this statement is not right then...nobody can jump from not having participated in the USAMO to winning haha. not that i can think of ^^

'Course, these students were accepted there before they participated in USAMO.

Actually, you can. Krishanu Sankar was a USAMO winner in 2007, but didn't qualify for the USAMO in 2006. But from what I know, that has more to do with him making stupid mistakes than improving that much. But it's still possible.

What'd suck is get the right m/n and add m+n wrong on the AIME.

Or when you misread 1000 as 100. Or when you forget that 21 is a multiple of 3. Or when you forget to divide by 4. Or when people decide to not walk on the moving walkway.

per shravas' comment "Actually, you can. Krishanu Sankar was a USAMO winner in 2007, but didn't qualify for the USAMO in 2006. But from what I know, that has more to do with him making stupid mistakes than improving that much. But it's still possible."

I happen to know him personally (he's a great guy) and yeah, from his account, it was all careless errors.

that does suck
this is a good thread, i like takling about math competitions.
there are like none on CC...all "Chance me" threads
lol if you go to AOPS however all of them are AIME/USAMO threads
but the ppl there are like 94750745082475027 x smarter than normall...like your average straight A 2400 HYPSMC valedictorian on BRAIN STEROIDS...(aops is like absoultely insane! a lot of CCers are AOPSers too tho)
and i sound stupid
so that's why i dont go there =)
