Amc12 -> Aime -> Usamo

I took it because I was chosen to write the USAMO...

It's practically the same as qualifying.

On another note, this year, there are several changes to the AMC 10/12 test. Questions that are left blank are now given 1.5 points instead of the original 2.5. So make sure to be scoring consistent 100s on that AMC 12 using the new calculation method! Good luck everyone!

But I've also heard that problems are supposed to be easier, to make up for the lower scores for omitted questions.

Hey...I don't have a math club in my school, although I am starting one (in response to a778999).

So guys, should I just skip volume 1 and buy volume 2? Or do I have to have volume 1 concepts before I move onto volume 2?

I took the AMC12 freshman year.. passed with a 108 or a 105.5.. can't remember which. Took the AIME, got a 3.. it depends more on math team skills than what classes you take. I was in Algebra II.. some girl in Calc BC got a 1 on the AIME.. you don't really need much preparation for it, just know your stuff and you're fine.

Man. I'm a junior applying to a special early college and a future professor (hopefully) who interviewed me, emailed me and asked if I could come to the school to take AMC12.

I'm a high 80s, low 90s student currently in PreCalculus.

Between now and Feb 21, do you think I can study enough to do well on the AMC12?

<a href="http://insightfulmind.com/corporate/index.php?page_id=139%5B/url%5D">http://insightfulmind.com/corporate/index.php?page_id=139</a></p>

Is this worth the 19 dollar price, and does anybody have any experience with it??

I'm taking the AMC12 on the 21 on Feb, and it seeeems like a good way to study since I am always on the computer anyway. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

Somehow I get the feeling that if this course really taught at the level you'd want it to, it wouldn't get enough business. You'd probably be better off just studying by yourself.

Next year you could take AoPS courses though. Those I hear are quite good.

Isn't there something changing this year? I may be imagining this but I seem to remember reading something that it was going to be more difficult to qualify this year. Does anyone else recall this?

Yea, you only get 1.5 points for omitted answers, not 2.5.

This also might (I'm not sure though) change the difficulty, and make it easier, too have the same amount of people qualify.

Officially the AMC12A is the 3rd and the AMC12B is the 21st

i got 133 on the amc 12b and 11 on aime last year when i was sophomore this year i'll get 140 , 14 potentially. Only thing i did was just buy the books (not textbooks, it has to contain many formulas with proofs) , memorize all the formulas and try some questions on <a href="http://www.kalva.demon.co.uk/%5B/url%5D">www.kalva.demon.co.uk/</a> and make sure to understand the answers. i know its really hard but at least if u memorize all those formulas u can get 8 maybe, and dont try to solve for 3 hours. spend 30 min on just problems you just solved and make sure not to make any mistakes. Mistake is the single most horrifying enemy that you might face

p.s geometry questions on 1-10 is extremely easy if you just know the formulas and which one to use.

^^You get to be my new hero.

no prob :) good luck

Hi...you all seem to be pretty experienced with these math contests. I'm going to be taking the AMC 12 for the first time (as a senior). I'm currently in AB Calc. and math has really never been a strong subject for me at all. I don't really have any hopes about making an extremely high score, but I would really appreciate some tips/advice about what to study so I won't completely embarrass myself, lol. :) What formulas should I have memorized? Is the AMC anything like SAT math? Thanks.

I think that the best way to study is to look at previous year's problems (you can find them here - <a href="http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/Forum/resources.php?c=182&cid=44)%5B/url%5D">http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/Forum/resources.php?c=182&cid=44)</a>, and just try them.

And all the material is only supposed to cover stuff up to pre-cal.

wat is a score that stands out to colleges for the AIME? Im a sophomore and got an 88.5 on the AMC12 which qualified me for the AIME since you need either a 100 or top 5%. I think I will do better next year, but for this year what is a quality score?
