Amda La

Hey,

I'm new to this place, so I'll give a quick summary of my small inquiry:

I've been in college for a year out here in California, I also attend an actor's studio where it was recommended to me by my instructor's and peers to audition for the AMDA MT Integrated Programme.
I have a close friend who works there, she would never steer me wrong, got a tour, bla bla bla....
Basically I really liked how the programme is set up... I've talked to students from the LA campus, and they love it... however one of my vocal instructor's and other's have varying opinions on the school

What are your opinions on the Los Angeles AMDA?

Of course your teachers are gonna want the best for you and if they find one lil thing wrong with the school, they'll tell you to keep looking for sumthing better. My Director/ Drama Teacher did the same thing. Every school is gonna have at least one thing wrong with them, but if you like the school, give it a shot. I dont know about you, but My director has heard nothing but good things about this school. He is the one who encouraged me to audition. And i made it. Im attending this Sept into the Integrated BFA program.

The main thing is id you think the school is rite for YOU. Good Luck on your decision.

Hi + hope you find what you are looking for. There has been a bit written previously on AMDA in NY, the LA version is set up by the same people and so is likely cut from the same cloth. I suggest you read the previous AMDA threads.

I've heard through the grapevine that the LA campus of AMDA is the "better" of the two. Apparently the faculty that used to be at the NY campus back when it had a better rep transfered over to LA when that campus opened up. Take this with a grain of salt though because I know nothing about either campuses personally, just want I heard.

I’ve been admitted to AMDA but am so far unimpressed with the treatment I’ve received. Their admissions department has been very pushy and the financial aid department miscalculated my aid.
This is troubling to me because I am a talented student of a non-traditional age (23) ready to grow and expand her craft seriously, but I’m concerned that if I drop everything and move to LA to attend AMDA, I’ll be sorely disappointed.
Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t know where you are from, but anytime you make a big move to a new area, you should really investigate to make sure you are making a sound financial and educational move. AMDA is a bit different than BA or BFA programs in that they are entirely a for-profit business and as such, they are there to make money. We live about an hour away, so know a number of people who have attended. It always sounds to me like their sales department is pretty pushy; they won’t make money unless they recruit students. They are similar in style financially to a technical school in that they have to enroll students to make money. This is not to say they don’t have some great talent there, or good instructors. I know there has been a lot of discussion as to the pros and cons of AMDA on this forum; I am in no way putting it down as I think it is a good fit for some people. However, they are going to have an aggressive recruiting style, which is maybe what you are seeing. I do know it is a fairly expensive program, so make sure it is what you want. In addition, LA is an expensive place to live, so if you are relocating to move there, do your homework. Try to talk to people who have attended the program to see what they got out of it. And above all, don’t let them push you into anything that you don’t want.

Well, my advice isn’t the best (or even really advice), but I have a friend who just finished his freshman year at AMDA LA and loved every minute of it. He says he recieved a lot of training, made great connections, and great friends. That doesn’t help you, but it’s proof that AMDA LA is helping someone!

AMDA is a not for profit school.
