American Living Abroad

So I’m wondering I’m an American living abroad and I wanted to know If some of you are able to go to school in America just by taking online classes? what are the cheapest schools? since obviously I’ll be considered an out of state student what schools do you people recommend to obtain a Bachelor Degree? thank you guys so much and I hope to hear from anybody and everybody  - Captain America

Are you asking about HIGH SCHOOL online courses/diploma? (The answer is yes, many universities accept accredited online high schools.)

What do you mean, what are the cheapest schools - do you mean colleges and universities? The cheapest option for US residents are community colleges followed by a transfer to a 4 year school. Outstanding students can also lower their costs with merit aid.

Without knowing more about what you’re looking for in a college/university, what your budget/situation is, what your grades and SAT/ACTs are, it’s hard to advise.

Also, ‘out of state’ is only relevant for state (i.e., public) universities. For private colleges & universities, as an American you are considered in the same pool with all the other American applicants- wherever they live. if you are a strong student, private can be less expensive than public- but some states have great scholarships for applicants with high stats.

I’m asking about Universities Online as I’m an American living “abroad” as in out of The USA. I’m looking for a College or University that doesn’t charge me as an International Student I hope this makes sense for ya

I’m looking for a College in America and I’m an American that is NOT living in The USA. To be more specific I’m living in South East Asia for matters of privacy I don’t want to tell you exactly where I live  but I do live in Southeast Asia and back to the point that I was making I want to go to an affordable college to obtain my bachelor degree any recommendations? Thanks bro

Was your education in an American-curriculum school, an international one (I.e. IB), that of the country you’re living in, or something else? And what grades/scores do you have? It would also help to know what majors you might be interested in.

I graduated in 2005 from High School and it was in The USA I’m an American who lives abroad  I’m interested in a criminal justice major I hope that helps

@Captain America : if you’re a citizen, you will NOT be charged nor considered an international student for fee/tuition purpose. Because you’re not “instate” you will not be considered instate anywhere, so you should focus on private universities (that don’t distinguish between instate and out of state) and on universities that give scholarships for Americans who got a certain score, plus universities that are less expensive to begin with. For instance, check out Truman State, or UMaine Kent.

You may get the most useful responses if you post in the Non-tradional Students sub-forum, which means people like you who’ve been out of high school for some years before applying.

Here’s a list of 20 universities with an online Bachelor’s degree program in criminal justice or related fields:
http://www.thebestschools.org/blog/2012/10/10/online-bachelor-criminal-justice-degree-programs/

I am in no position to judge if those include the cheapest or the “best” online programs out there.

This is not my area of expertise, and I don’t know how you’ve handled your ex-pat status, but if you’ve been paying non-resident taxes in some state – presumably the one where you lived most recently, you MAY be considered in-state there. If that weren’t the case, US gov’t employees wouldn’t accept foreign postings.

Why criminal justice? I don’t think other countries recognize it since they have their own justice systems. Or do you mean criminology (which is considered legit in most countries, and in-demand).
Do you WANT to stay in your current country or do you think you have to?
To guarantee value, look for “brick and mortar” universities offering degrees both online and “on campus” in your subject.
Here’s an example

Here’s another good one: http://www.umuc.edu/

Both PSU and UMUC do offer some live classes at various locations around the world - usually on or near US military bases.
