I was admitted into the School of International Services. I have the choice of either attending a public UC here in California (UC Irvine) or attending American. I’m majoring in International Relations.

I’m just having trouble committing to a college. My parents want me to just go to UCI and call it a day and admittedly it would be a lot easier for me to do. I’d have to pay ~25k a year for American while UCI is 10k. My major and the connections/internships I can partake in at American/D.C. would really give me a lot of opportunities. The only… good… internships I could take at UCI is the UC system’s UCDC program which sends 50-70 students each year to DC to intern.

I don’t know where I’m going with this but basically I’d want to know if anyone else is attending American SIS and why over your other colleges? If there are any other current students could you shed some new light on your experiences and if it really is worth attending? What have you gained from being in SIS/the D.C. area that you couldn’t get elsewhere? What would you choose if you were in my position?

Hello there, I also come from Southern California. I have been accepted to UC San Diego, UC Irvine, UC Davis, Santa Barbara, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo etc. If I stay in California it would cost less; nonetheless American University has something that the UC’s don’t have-location. Frankly there’s nothing better for someone aspiring to work in politics or government to live in the capital where most policy decision (that affect the entire world) occur. Laslty I’m also an International Studies major. I understand that your parents want you to attend UC Irvine, but don’t enroll in a school because your parents want you to go to a particular school. It’s your future, but its up to you. Hope to see you there this fall.

question for other parents…how does one compare AU vs. Bucknell vs. Lehigh. My daughter has been admitted to all 3, and has a particular interest in both International Relations and Dramatic Arts. Any advice appreciated on relative merits of these three quality schools!

PLEASE HELP FOR AMERICAN UNIVERSITY DC
Theatre Major

my d is admitted for the fall as an intended major in theatre (has not auditioned yet), so she will need to audition in October for Musical Theatre.
We understand there is a BA in Musical Theatre and BA in Theatre, both entered into by audition. However we are still very confused… Is there a NONaudition Performance Major for Theatre that she is in now, (as an “intended theatre major”) or that she will be for sure into if the BA auditions are not successful? We have read some posts about some “performance track” and “theatre arts” and “non performing theatre arts” but can’t find any program specifics on the website about these other options besides the two clear BA programs.

We’d appreciate it IMMENSELY if you could shed some light on this…
thank you so much!

For Reneemarie: According to the AU website, the undergrad programs in the Performing Arts department are: BA Audio Production, BS Audio Technology, BA Music, BA Musical Theatre, BA Theatre, Minor Audio Technology, Minor Dance, Minor Music, Minor Theatre. Unless something has changed from last year, acceptance into Musical Theater or Theatre requires an audition. So your daughter will not be considered a part of the MT or Theatre programs when she starts school in the fall. Not having been accepted into a particular program, I believe she will be enrolled in the College or Arts and Sciences by default–which is where the theater programs reside anyway. Since majors aren’t formally declared until the end of sophomore year, and she’ll be able to take many performing arts courses, it won’t matter, so long as she eventually has a successful audition. (I’m wondering why she didn’t audition in the winter or spring with everyone else?) The rate of acceptance into the programs is high, but not guaranteed. (My familiarity comes from having a D who started as an MT major.)

If your daughter attends the accepted students event, she’ll be able to have all her questions answered.

Also at AU auditions are open to both majors and nonmajors, so even as a freshman she will be able to audition for both department and student run productions. My d (a freshman) has been in both departmental productions and student run (AU players) with a wide variety of majors.
(I am also curious why she didn’t audition?)

American wasn’t at the Unifieds and we could only make Chicago and LA. I couldn’t manage a separate trip to DC just for one school. Thanks for the clarification, I appreciate it.

my son is accepted to AU and will visit soon - IR major. He is trying to decide between AU/U of Denver/Berkeley. He was accepted at USD, UCLA and USC (no fin aid there), waitlisted at Georgetown, GW, Stanford, Dartmouth and Tufts (PURGATORY). He is kinda upset with AU because he applied for the Global Scholars program, but didn’t get in to that.
Any thoughts from anyone? We are trying to help him weigh pros/cons of all this - while he maintains his GPA (4 AP classes) and all his extra curr. stuff!
