Hello,
I was wondering, what my chances are regarding admission to American University? My freshmen year GPA was absolutely horrid (2.5). However, it has risen immensely, with a 3.5 sophomore year and a 3.9-4.0 my junior year, with a number of APs (Between Junior and Senior year I'll have roughly 4 and I'm assuming I'll get 4s and 5s on the exams). Also, my SAT score is incredibly average, at an 1860. I have good EC's: I've started a religious diversity club, I am captain of my schools debate team and ranked as the top speaker in NJ, I am teaching debate to younger students, I am politically active, and I've written for a politically oriented online magazine. Furthermore, I am a black belt and work as an assistant, teaching martial arts. Additionally, I will have glowing recommendations from truly qualified teachers. Unfortunately, I am an out of state student (NJ) which I know can hinder my chances. I would love some insight regarding my chance of admission.
Thank you very much

bump- Can someone help me out?

It isn’t being out-of-state that is an issue, since American is a private school.

You’re far from the first applicant who had a rough 9th grade; the strong grades since then are very helpful.

What was your SAT CR score? Your SAT Math score? Most colleges look much more closely at those than at the SAT writing score, and many don’t even use the writing score.

Have you looked at taking a sample ACT to see if it is a stronger test for you?

@arabrab Thanks for the reply! My combined CR and Math is a 1220. That score was achieved with very little studying, so I believe I can increase said score by at least 100 points when I take it again in October (after studying). I hope that helps!

Bump

I think you have a good shot at getting in. Your freshman year grades certainly don’t help but I think your ECs will make up for that. Your SATs are fine but raising your math/cr to 1300 will make you competitive. Also have you tried any subject tests? They might work out in your favor.

@sumobats Thanks for the encouraging words! I am trying to decide whether to take the SAT reasoning test or subject tests in October.

Bump

Agree with comments above. You have a decent shot with your improved standings.Adding some quantifiable community service to your resume would be of help as well and of course focus on elevating your SAT scores a tad higher would also be a bonus.

@svannahmom I have about 75 hours of community service and I intend on retaking the SATs in October. Hopefully that bolsters my chance of admittance.

If you apply ED you’d have ~73% chance of getting in; American doesn’t do EA which blows

@satgad Damn, that sucks. I visited the school and liked it. However, it is so limiting to apply ED. Maybe it’s worth it though, so I can secure a position at a good university.

My son has a 34/36 on the ACTs, 780 Subject SAT Bio, 760 Subject SAT Chem. His GPA is 3.0. He goes to a top private school in Manhattan/NYC. I add this fact, because, I was told that the weighted GPA can be higher as a result. He has taken tough courses (e.g. Advanced Physics, Adv Math, Adv Computer Sci). Was told that schools would look at these favorably. Not sure though.
