Hi all,
I’m pretty much set on committing to American’s mentorship program in D.C., but I’m hesitant about fitting into the population. As I’ve heard from others, students generally come from upper class families and the vast majority is white. I’m white, female, and from a suburb of Philadelphia (Delaware County). I’m middle class, and go to a high school in Upper Darby. I’m used to a more diverse, middle class population of kids. Most people from my school attend state schools like West Chester or Temple, but I’m not interested in that. If anyone has some insight on how kids like me fit in around American’s campus, it would be greatly appreciated!
We have a close family friend’s son attending American - he absolutely loves it there. He is a white male but they are not wealthy. They are also from the midwest which is very grounded in comparison to either coast. The suburbs he lives in are somewhat diverse (mostly diversified by Asians, some Hispanics, few Black).
My daughter is a junior and most of her friends at AU are on scholarships and aid and definitely not upperclass, though she has some for whom money is no object. It doesn’t come across to me as a school only for privileged people (which wouldn’t have included us anyway… I think you’ll meet all kinds, though it for sure swings more towards people with money than many a state university would, for comparison.
It depends what major you are in. I’m in CAS (Theater mostly) and it’s a lot of kind of entitled, and not really diverse (a lot of white, female, northeastern, upperclass) people, from my experience. But that may just be the kind of people the major attracts
