A friend of my daughter was just audited because of her Americorps education award from a couple of years ago. I was surprised as I would have assumed it was like any scholarship and not taxable if used for education expenses (which it was), but having quickly googled it, it seems like it is taxable whatever you use it for. Any knowledgeable people or people with first hand experience who can confirm this.

Thanks, swimcatsmom, for posting this. I, too, assumed the Americorps education award was treated like any other scholarship until I read your post and then searched online for more info. The confusing part to me is D’s school included her Americorps award on the 1098 but according to the Americorps website, 1099’s for their awards will be sent out by the end of this month. Looking forward to anyone with experience in this situation to post.

Going to bump this up and see if anyone else replies. Getting ready to do sons taxes and he worked Americorps this summer. He did get the 1099 in the mail just have to figure out where we post this on the taxes. Anyone with any advice on the process for reporting the americorps pay as well as the educational credit , it would be greatly appreciated!!

D1s Americorps pay for the past 2 calendar years came on W2s and I just reported as usual wages on her taxes.

Sorry, she got another job and had to leave before her term was up, so she’s not eligible for an educational award.
