AmeriCorps Segal Educational Grant?!

Hello everyone!

Hope everyone has been dong well and life has been fabulous!

Today, I completed my the final hours I needed for my 300 hour AmeriCorps position!! I’m pretty happy about that. My contract doesn’t officially end until the end of the month, but I did my end of term evaluation and hopefully the process has begun for my educational award.

Has anyone on here received an educational grant from AmeriCorps? Is it flexible to use, or only straight for tuition/ loans? :open_mouth:

I don’t know much about AmeriCorps, but I’m happy for you that you found a solid way to pay for school. Congratulations on completing your hours!

I think you can use it like you could use a Pell grant, for tuition or up to the COA for your school. At least with the full grant for a 10 month service contract, you can use it all at once or over several terms.

You really need to ask these questions before you commit to a program. You could be taken advantage of if you commit to something before you know what the benefit will be.

@whitespace You are too sweet! Thank you very much!

If you look on the Americorps webpage, it tells you how to set up an account, and then you tell the college or loan servicer how much you want to pay on your bill and when. The school then pulls from your account. You can use the money for qualified expenses. You can use them all at once or over several terms until they expire (I think it is several years that they are good for). Looks like you’ll get about $1225. It doesn’t say how quickly after you complete the hours that your award will be there, but it didn’t appear to be a long delay.

I must’ve missed something. How did you figure out how to pay for school?

@romanigypsyeyes I am concerned that she never did as despite many requests for updates, none were given. I wish this OP the best and hope she isn’t one of those students posting during the spring that they don’t have enough to continue their education.

@romanigypsyeyes, I think that OP has cobbled together funds to pay for the first year, but doesn’t have clear funding for all 4 years. I see why @itsgettingreal17 is concerned. OP’s scholarships covered all but ~$13k/year. A thread in late June mentioned a Parent PLUS loan, so it sounds like she’ll graduate with the $27k student loan and ~$28k in PLUS loans (for a degree in journalism, if memory serves). If her parents are turned down for the PLUS loan, she’d be offered an additional $4k loan, right? My concern for OP is that she has so many different funding sources – a grant from the college, a one time scholarship here, another small grant there – that if any fall through or there’s an unexpected expense somewhere, she won’t be able to cover the gap, and her parents can’t afford to help her. I wish her well.

She was still waiting to hear from a big service scholarship/program at her school that would pay for any remaining tuition costs. She has said she IS going, so getting all this funding a little at a time is better than not getting any funds.

Hello everyone!!

I would like some input. I’m STILL waiting to hear about my financial aid award for the NGSC. I was told that it should appear on my account my mid-July, which was last Friday. So I spoke to someone and they said within the next two weeks, but I emailed one of the directors from the program yesterday and I’m still waiting for their reply.
They said the way to calculate it is by taking tuition, adding 2500 (The stipend, which I wonder why I’m adding on, my thought would be to subtract it), then take away any scholarships or grants form the University.
So my award would be $13,240, and it’s renewable every year.

Tuition + stipend is correct according to the website. So thats’s $9,684 + $2,500 for a total of $12,184. Remember that the $12,184 is what you would get if you were not awarded any other scholarships from the school, and I recall that you were awarded some small scholarships/grant. The most you can get is $12,184 from all school resources (no stacking), except loans, so you need to subtract your scholarships from the $12,184 to determine the amount of the NGSC.

From your previous post, you were awarded - University Grant of $614.00 and an ASU Academic Achievement Scholarship of $2,000.00. So if that is all the school aid you received, your NGSC scholarship should be $9,570.

Tuition and fees for an AZ resident is $12,940. COA if living on campus will be at least $27,744, as there is a note that Barrett students will have higher room and board. Did you come up with enough funds to cover the difference (higher than $15,000) for all 4 years?

They revoked my University Grant after I received my Vantage West Scholarship. They didn’t even tell me, it just disappeared from my account. I was pretty bummed about that.
:’(

But it shouldn’t matter if the other scholarship is paying for anything the U doesn’t give you. It doesn’t matter whether the U gives you $600 or it is in your NGSC, same net to you.

So I’m still confused- did you end up getting enough funds to cover all 4 years?

I am not trying to be a pain but I’ve been hearing about this for months and now school starts in several weeks and I’m concerned you’re not going to actually start…

Romani, many of us have the very same question, but we have yet to get an answer. I think maybe the OP doesn’t want to answer the question, because she knows the response she will get here.

@CTTC, good attempt, but here’s why I haven’t updated, because I still haven’t heard back from NGSC about my amount. Once I hear back from them, then I can post on here. Believe me, I’ve been hounding everyone at the office of Financial Aid and Scholarships I need to so I can get an answer!!

And yes, I can afford to keep a place over my head and food in my tummy.

That’s why I asked about the Parent PLUS loans, they’re not included in the calculation, plus I haven’t accepted anything, because for sure I MUST SEE the NGSC in my student account.

I was fortunate to buy my dorm itens with my 4-H scholarship money

@Lovenetc, You’re being extremely patient and mature about this whole thing. Please refresh my memory…

Have your parents applied for a Parent Plus loan? I think they have to do that separately. @MYOS1634, Don’t OP’s parents have to apply, be approved, and designate the college as the recipient before a PLUS loan is applied to her account?

OP, how much grant and scholarship money have you actually gotten? You were awarded some that later disappeared, right? How much was that? You have an outstanding grant (NGSC) that you haven’t received a clear amount for, but you expect it to end up being ~$9k?

If you subtract the grants that are currently in your portal from the cost of attendance (~$27k/year?), how much is left to cover?
