Amgen or Lockheed?

if you had the chance to intern at both of these companies, which would you choose?

Amgen is a biotech company, largest one in fact.

Amgen is a fortune 100 best company to work for, Lockheed is not

Assume Pay for intern is same.

assume both locations are about equal

please explain why,

i think working at lockheed with planes and missiles is pretty cool,

but amgen also gives a good feeling because you help make drugs that better peoples' lives

Both companies capitalize on on extreme money making markets (drug dependency, defense contracting), but you should ask yourself, is Amgen/Lockheed going to be a Google work environment? Where you can come to work in Pajamas and take naps and jogs? Would you actually matriculate and turn over to full time (and like it)?

Lockheed Martin would stand out more on my r

i am an engineering major, so i dont think i would be doing any lab work at amgen

Well then go for Lockheed, no questions asked. Aeronautical space engineers get paid a TON. The bus driver who drove me to my internship every day, his son graduated from RPI and worked for Boeing. Pent house suites, tons of money from consultations, 6 figure, almost reaching 7, this and that.

Remember, the Biotech boom is over. As I mentioned Millenium above, their stock was above a hundred, now it's $11. MERCK is undergoing a 9,200 person lawsuit I think, for one of its drugs. People don't trust "big drug" anymore. My friend's father got laid off at Johnson & Johnson; not only did he get laid off, his lab staff got laid off, his boss got laid off, and his boss's boss got laid off--the entire spectrum.

You see what I am getting at here. We are at war, and we need weapons. Iran looks like the next step. We need weapons to deter North Korea: ICBMs, new stealth aircraft, helicopters, everything.

As an engineer, I think if you had an internship at Lockheed, you should DEFINITELY take it. (What's better on a graduate school application?)

aero space engineers get paid a TON? maybe slightly more than the average engineer, but starting salary at boeing/lockheed is still probably 50-54k. Pent house suites, 6 figure 7 figure? the average engineer at lockheed is not getting any of this.

how about BOEING or LOCKHEED

BOEING no contest =)

seriously go intern there, they have a pretty good internship program geared towards making sure interns get jobs and become successful in the corporate world. not to mention boeing will fully pay your tuition for graduate or MBA degrees. one of the top internships as rated by princetonreview. i did it last summer, good experience, recommended.

lockheed sucks ;)

how does boeing ensure that their interns become successful, they have so many??

development day (hear top executives talk about networking, climbing the corporate ladder, managing your manager, etc.), mentor program, intern networking program, internal job fair (get a job before internship is even over), various tours, other lunchtime talks, MBA fairs and talks, etc.

i'm not surprised princetonreview rates it as one of the top internships out there. boeing is definitely not the "i'm just going to go work there for 10 weeks and try to get the most of it" kind of deal. there's more to the experience than just the work.

this is about right. lockheed (actually probably most in the aerospace industry) pays slightly higher than boeing, but boeing offers a more comprehensive overall package.

pay can increase dramatically as you move up. mid-level managers are in the 80k range, and those above them are in the 6-figure range. boeing pays for full tuition if you get an MBA or a grad degree, which can help you move up into a management position.

another thing to remember is that the aerospace industry is cyclical.

Lockheed no contest. Boeing blows goats.

oh yes and also Lockheed just has more presence in the community of Defense contractors...they are the 800 lb gorilla...

boeing owns commercial industry (haha airbus) AND is one of the big guns on defense industry and space industry
