Hey everyone, my name is Paul. This is my first post. Im just looking for opinions over whether i should pick Amherst or Dartmouth. I'm leaning towards majoring in political science though im not 100% sure. I also got into Cornell but they didn't give me enough aid. I'll appeal but im not gunna get m hopes to high.

Amherst and Dartmouth are better than Cornell in nearly all fields, so don’t worry about not getting enough aid to go.

Amherst and Dartmouth are both pretty similar schools. Are small classes important to you? Both have relatively small classes, but Amherst’s are much smaller. The political science departments are strong at each school. What do you plan to do after graduation? What sports do you play?

I don’t play any sports, though im very fit. I might do intramural soccer when i go to school. I already know about some basic similarities - small classes, good poli sci, and great alumn network at both, and differences - Greek life at Dartmouth vs none at Amherst, Middle of nowhere at Dartmouth vs sizable surrounding population at Amherst. Im just looking for personal opinions over which school i should go to cuz im incredibly happy to be accepted to both. i can’t make up my mind.

After graduation…well if im recruited for a good-paying job then great, ill take it. But i do plan on going on to a higher degree sometime after i graduate.

First, Cornell would not even be in the equasion for me if I was into Dartmouth and Amherst.

I have kids at both schools. I’d pick Dartmouth hands down. Kids seem happier there, school spirit is amazing. It’s enough bigger to be more interesting over 4 years. Both are amazing schools though.

I think I’d be pulling my hair out if I had gotten accepted to both. Amherst and Dartmouth are both colleges that if I could do it all over, I would applied to and really wanted to attend.

In the end, though, I think I’d pick Dartmouth. Having gone to a school that was an LAC but different in just about every other way from Dartmouth, I’d love a small school in the middle of nowhere (because that means that the students will make their own fun on campus during the weekends, and I won’t get left behind on campus bored because I was without a car like I did at my alma mater); I’ve always wanted to join a sorority and participate in Greek life, and I love sports and would love the school spirit. Plus, it’s a little bit bigger – I loved my small LAC but I often wished it were just a little bit bigger. Plus I think the name recognition for Dartmouth is a lot better as well.

I really wish I could have done it all over again, I didn’t apply because I knew I couldn’t afford it, but I should’ve at least done the exchange program my LAC had with Dartmouth! I was planning to, but it fell through for some reason.

My freshman at Dartmouth loves his experience more than my other kids love their experiences (SUNY Bing, CMU, MIT in addition to these 2 in all). Loves the classes, is very engaged with profs, loves the ski hill and outdoor activities and has a very active social life. We’ve met many of his friends and find them a very smart, very social group.

DD is a junior at Amherst, transferred last year. She enjoys the school but finds it a little small. She does enjoy the consortium and ability to take classes at the other schools. Social life/school spirit less enthusiastic than Dartmouth’s. Great group of kids too.

Honestly I wouldn’t even appeal Cornell. Dartmouth and Amherst, in my opinion, will serve you much better. Between these two I prefer Dartmouth for the D-plan (love sophomore summer and the study abroad options), the size, and the social scene. I really think highly of Amherst, however. My advice is to visit the accepted students days at both and then decide. Congrats on getting into two of the best schools in the country!

thanks slipper! at this point i’m kinda wishing i could just go to both, haha.
though…the idea of not coming home for summer during sophomore year doesn’t sit well with me. I’d miss my friends.

Honestly Sophomore summer is amazing. Its like camp for 20 year olds. BBQs, awesome academics, swimming in the river, living off campus in a fun house with your best friends, fun parties with just your class, etc. By the end of sophomore year your college friends will be some of your best friends and sophomore summer makes your Dartmouth class so much tighter than other colleges. You’ll have the other two summers with your high school friends or at Internships, I know for most Dartmouth students Sophomore summer was one of the best summers of their lives. An added benefit is you get to take off a fall, winter, or spring term which means special access to Internships (a big benefit) or you can escape a whole winter (like I did) and get a grant for your thesis research (I spent my junior winter in the pacific doing thesis research - Dartmouth gave me a 10K grant to do it, time of my life).

man, i wish i had your problem… i applied got rejected to both:(
you cant go wrong with either, just visit them and see which one feels just right. personally, amherst was my first choice and dartmouth was my second.

I would love to be in the OP’s position next year sighs
I would choose Amherst,on secound thought,Dart,no Amherst. I don’t think you could go wrong at either place.
