Hi guys. I am an intl student from India - need aid. I wanted your opinion on which college to choose… Amherst or Dartmouth. I am looking for a math major…
I like both colleges a lot. But the Greek life at dartmouth and lack of diversity is off putting but Amherst seems to have a competitive vibe… I don’t know which one to choose. I would like to do research and go to a college with a strong community vibe.
With respect to your academic interests, Amherst appears in a Princeton Review sampling (available in the print edition), “Great Schools for Mathematics Majors.”
Amherst! My daughter attends and absolutely loves it. As a parent, I am incredibly grateful that she is getting such a wonderful education and incredible college experience. We are very proud of her and what she has accomplished there. It has required a lot of work, but as she has told us more than once, it is not a burden because it is work that she loves in subjects she is interested in. The open curriculum is a huge plus and I believe it makes it a less competitive vibe, not more.
I will also recommend Amherst! Liberal art colleges tend to lean towards collaborative work, rather than competition, and Amherst is no exception. Moreover, if you are not interested in Greek life and are interested in a more diverse campus, Amherst is the right choice.
However - remember that admissions rates to competitive colleges like Amherst or Dartmouth are very low for international students. What does your profile look like (Stats, ECS, etc)?
BTW, the acceptance rate for Amherst for international students for class of 2023 was 5%, compared to 16% for American citizens/permanent residents (total acceptance rate was 13%), so you will have to be among the top applicants.
The good news, though, is that, if you have a top profile, you will also be considered by colleges which are not need-blind for international students.
