D needs to decide which school she will attend in this fall from Penn and Amherst. Her major will be English. Which one is better in English? She plans to visit both schools recently. But now any input is welcome.

Hard to say ara) I’m not familiar with Penn’s curriculum and b) they are very different types of schools (university vs LAC).

Amherst’s English department is very strong. I encourage you to check out some of the professors and courses offered. https://www.amherst.edu/academiclife/departments/english The department has brought in some very distinguished faculty members in the past, including poet laureates.

The other thing to keep in mind are the differences in the curriculum as a whole between Penn and Amherst. The open curriculum at Amherst (no core or distribution requirements) means your daughter can take whatever interests her the most from her first semester at Amherst. If she has a particular interest within English or has something else she wants to study in addition to that, the open curriculum will allow her to deepen her interests or diversify her studies without having to balance completing her major requirements AND completing the requirements of a core curriculum.
