I’m trying to choose between Amherst and Tufts! I have visited both and they’re both excellent. I need to choose before May 1st! Any Help???

You should give us something to work with.

Since this is the Amherst College board, tell us very specifically why you would want to spend your next four years at Amherst.

What positive qualities about Amherst do you find personally important?

What reservations do you have that would cause you to want to enroll at Tufts instead of Amherst?

Since you are a self-proclaimed “inquisitive” person, it should be very easy for you to answer these questions.

I loved Amherst because of its extremely small size. I also love the fact that it’s not as lively as a big city like NY (where I’m from) but at the same time, it’s not dead. I also think that the five college consortium will be a great opportunity to utilize. However, upon discussing my dilemma with one of my mentors, he says that Tufts’ alumni connection is great, especially in the medical field (I do plan on becoming a doctor).

So, alumni connection is my only major concern about Amherst apart from a few other petty concerns that shouldn’t have much effect on my decision.

Really? You don’t have a gut feel? Have you visited both after having been accepted? I know my son looked at things a lot differently knowing they wanted him.

Son really liked both of these schools as well – and I am just gonna throw this out there… Amherst alumni are pretty chill as well.

I think Amherst is much, much better as a school. You will have closer relationships with your fellow classmates. It is a much more selective school. Amherst’s a great town. I would definitely say Amherst.

Amherst is more selective for sure. Universities that share cross applications with Amherst are couple notches above Tufts.

your future success will depend first on your own abilities/excellence, not alumni network. I don’t think amherst’s alumni network is any less strong than Tufts’s (smaller, yes).

A statistic I’ve heard from some of my pre-med friends is that 1 in 7 Amherst alums is a doctor, and Amherst consistently has one of the top alumni giving rates of any school in the country. I wouldn’t worry about the alumni network at Amherst. If anything, it’s likely stronger, if admittedly smaller.

Thanks everyone. I’ve made my mind up…finally! and I’ll send in the deposit tomorrow just so I don’t change it again. I never really had that “gut feeling” that everyone talks about but for logical reasons, it’s Amherst. :)

That’s great to hear.

Congratulations!! You made a very good choice.

Congratulations, I made the same choice last month. Go Lord Jeffs!
