Hi. Im considering applying to Amherst ED, but I have a couple questions.

What is the general feel of the academics at Amherst? What are some of the more popular/interesting classes? Is the amount of work overwhelming?

What is there to do at Amherst during the week?

Is Amherst a big party school?

What are the people like at Amherst? Are students competitive with eachother in the classroom? Are the students for the most part down-to-earth and welcoming?

What is it like as an athlete at Amherst?

Thank you. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I graduated from Amherst a number of years ago so my answers to your queries may not be current or applicable. However, if at all possible, I would recommend spending one weekday and a weekend before applying early decision. If accepted, you are bound to attend.

Amherst has many strengths-small classes, close community, wonderful profs, seminars, five college consortium, etc.; however, you need to find out whether it suits you. Also consider geography: it is a small college located in a college town in rural New England. A wonderful experience for many but not for everyone.

All I know is that my D has to work harder than she has ever worked! But she loves it there. Again, all she knew about it was what she read. Her visit clinched her decision. It is a perfect fit for her even though it is the exact opposite of what she "thought" she wanted. Some of your questions are based on people's personal tastes, etc. Second what pymen wrote - go visit and find out for yourself!
