I just saw an article on this and I thought it would be of interest.

I did not read all of the details but Amtrak is offering a free ticket for a parent accompanying a high school junior or senior going on a college visit, if the ticket is booked in advance.

It seems like a good deal for people visiting colleges in cities served by Amtrak!

I'm a big fan of Amtrak since my eldest started attending school in Boston three years ago. If you're planning to travel to/from school by train, be sure to purchase a Student Advantage membership (StudentAdvantage.com) which entitles you to a 15% discount on every trip. The membership has paid for itself in the first trip each year. It also gives students a number of other discounts (Barnes and Noble, e.g.), fast food chains, sporting goods, etc., so it's a good value. And be sure to open an Amtrak rewards account where you earn points for every trip.

I think they have had this deal for awhile - it's certainly a great idea to take advantage of if it fits where you need to travel. We weren't looking at anything more than a couple of hours from home so it didn't apply to us.

But we love using the train - have taken it to Chicago a couple of times - it's a great way to travel!
