An alternative to the SAT...

What would you think about abandoning the SAT in favor of required AP tests, in which the actual raw scores are released (not just 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)?

I think if say someone scores say a 94% on an AP test it would be a great indicator of future college success, much moreso than the SAT and possibly even than GPA. My rationale behind this is that a near perfect score on an AP test would require that someone is very smart and works very hard; the SAT, and sometimes GPA, may say neither.

What do you think?

I say this with strong SAT scores and the knowledge that the 5's I got on my AP tests were likely borderline...

AP Tests are harder than the SATs... like, way harder.

well that would be kind of the point. as far as testing is concerned, i think a 95% on an AP Comp or Lit exam would say much more than an 800 on the SAT Verbal, or even an 800 on the SAT Lit.

I'm not saying these tests should replace school - just the SAT.

And I'm just saying that that's unfair to kids who don't want to take AP classes, and just want to happily go to UC Riverside or CSU San Francisco or something of that caliber. Also AP Tests are more specialized than SATs, if anything, it would make far more sense to substitute them for SAT IIs.

I see what you mean. Perhaps all I ask is that the individual raw scores be released.

There are already alternatives to the SAT. many schools allow you to take results of the ACT in addition to the SAT and a growing number of schools are becoming SAT optional. You can find SAT optional schools at www.fairtest.org
