An average Junior.. any chances????..:(

i'm starting to get frustrated with my LOW GPA.
I flunked my freshman year.. and now regretting......... (DANG!!!)
9th grade GPA: 3.3
10th grade GPA: 3.9
11th grade GPA(the one that I just received): 4.0

I'm currently taking
IB English [with TOK]
IB Math
IB Biology
IB European History
Honors Algebra 2
Honors US History
Chemistry
Japanese

Do I have any chance...?
to get in to JHS?

[SAT score: 800 590(CR) 780]

While your grades seem--as you've mentioned--very average (if not below), you may be able to cover that up with ECs....

Have you got any extracurricular activities? What are they? EC's are very important these days, and I'd seriously recommend you get a couple before applying to any university.....

upward trends are good, they'll see ur improving. make sure rest of jr year and sr yr is good. and u might wanna take sat's again, cuz even tho ur math and writing are very strong, ur CR is quite low.

Just reinforcing what nanaijuh said.

Your upward trend looks great. Freshmen year is often stereotyped as the year which colleges ignore. This is not the case for Hopkins; they won't ignore it. But they do place less weight on the Freshmen year compared to your Junior and Senior years, since it was more of a transition year than a true test of your aptitude.

Colleges will also "cherry-pick" your best SAT scores. So if you take them over again and boost that Critical Reading score, it won't matter if the other scores go down (note: take the SAT's no more than 3 times. Any more and you're just doing overkill.)

You look solid, just keep that GPA up and be diligent in your extra-curriculars.

Good luck.

An Admin Director at Johns Hopkins came to my school's college night this Monday, Jan 30th. He said, and I quote, "Johns Hopkins does not consider freshman grades whatsoever." So onlygod89, I would say you have little to worry about regarding your GPA.

Oh wow... Alright, I stand corrected.

Actually, DBSchwim and Jimp are both correct - how strange! Freshman grades do matter and the Admissions counselors do look at the freshman year courses and grades.

Yet, freshman grades also do matter in terms of the reported GPA that our Admissions Office will calculate and publish. Every year for statistical purposes we must publish and average GPA of our admitted class -- this is an unweighted 4.0 GPA for sophomore and junior year only.

So, yes freshman grades are evaluated but for statistical purposes they are not factored in.

Oh and yes admission daniel .. is there any news u would like to share with us international or for that matter all applicants regarding no.s relatijng to this year's pool. I mean the figures as many of other college do release on completion of processing ..

ALso , how many International students generally apply for financial Aid and how many of that really get in .. ?

Smartmind

Don't have numbers yet -- when we do I will share on the Hopkins Insider blog.

It is a HUGE applicant pool though.

As for the number of international students applying for financial aid it is usually around a third of the international applicant pool. Unfortunately, very few (less than 30) of international students will be admitted and offered financial aid -- it is quite competitive.
