An engineering major looking for some adive.

So I am a ME major and have been thinking of the grand ole' future. I am very interested in my degree and want to pursue a master's after I graduate. I am also interested in investments but I don't want to do this straight out of college. I would eventually like to pursue an MBA and work in an investment company or a high managerial position in an engineering company. Either way I want to get the MBA for a number of different reasons. (knowledge, experience, networking, better job placement). After a number of years of working I would eventually like to start my own company and work with engineers and scientists and implement their ideas/products/devices into the real world. Either by buying their product and labeling it under a company label or investing in them.

My question is are the MBA and MSME a good combination of what I want to do or should I be looking at different degrees or maybe even none at all?

Just go one step at a time. Good idea to get an MSME. Many engineering management positions do not require an MBA or the MBA is not viewed as adding value.

Just get a job at a good large company where you can be exposed to many things - engineering, project mgt, engineering mgt, sales, etc… Most of them will pay for an MBA if you choose to go the night school route.

In your eyes what are some good companies to work for? Is it more valuable to work initially in a large or small company?

Depends on what you want to do. Who recruits ME’s at your campus? That is a good place to start. Where do you want to live? You have lots of options.

I started at TI when I was young. It was valuable, they threw us into a lot at a young age. Good experience. Wish I would have done more while there.
