An essay about tongue twisters?

One of Georgetown’s essay prompts (or at least I think it’s considered a prompt) is: “Indicate any special talents or skills you possess (250 words).” My mom suggested I write about how easily I connect with kids, but I think it would be cool to write about tongue twisters and how I’m a master of those then maybe weave it in. Would talking about tongue twister skills be too silly of an essay topic to write about?

Sounds like a much more interesting topic than how you connect with kids. Just make sure you use the essay to reveal something about you, maybe connect it to a passion for words, an interest in language, communications etc.

Tongue twisters gets my vote.

Awesome sauce! One more question: Haverford has a question about intellectual curiosity and I also want to write about tongue twisters for that. Would it be weird/bad to write two completely different essays for two different colleges about the same topic?

Love the tongue twister essay. It is unique to you, interesting and personal. You hit all 3 of my marks. Tell mom you love her but getting along with people is neither a special skill or special talent. It’s just being human.

My son copied and pasted when the question /topic were basically the same. Some he made minor adjustments to get his point across.

Tongue twisters. It’s simple. It shows who you are. Anyone who doesn’t think it’s a strong enough topic doesn’t get the idea of the college essay.

Here’s the litmus test of the great college essay: If you were to drop a print-out of your essay on the floor outside your HS cafeteria, and the paper did not have your name on it, if someone picked it up and read it, would they know it was yours?

Fantabulous! I’m sticking with my tongue twister essays for Haverford and Georgetown. Would it be safe to post the opening paragraph drafts for feedback?

I would not. There are people who are willing to read essays on cc, pick one of them (preferably an experience poster). and ask them. But I agree, it is a potentially good topic.

No. Please don’t post your essays in public forums or show them to your friends either. If you PM a poster here to read your essay, check their posting history first to make sure they’re an experienced (adult) poster.

I think your topic sounds interesting. Write it and see where it goes.

Remmember, it’s not just about “who you are.” It’s for your college app and is ‘who you are that they will want in their class.’ They’ll be looking for attributes they value. Be sure those show.

Good advice above. Tongue twisters sounds fun, go for it.

I love the idea of tongue twisters as well. Heck, one of the best essays I read in recent years was about raising chickens. Do not post any part of drafts here or anywhere, but I’d be happy to read & comment if you want to PM me.
