Given that most schools require deposits by May 1 and many students who get accepted at Michigan are deciding amongst more than one school, thus they may want to plan an overnight visit if accepted, I can understand the frustration. Many of the applicants are from out of state and cannot easily get there for a visit on less than 10 days notice.

Sounds like they had a lot more applications than they expected. That means they must be doing something right. but, for many applicants, their interaction with admissions is their window into the school at the moment.

Woody, I’m not seeing where she says anything about funds (assuming she didn’t edit her post). And Mich isn’t underfunded.

And bearcats, again, you don’t need to be so condescending and snarky. You don’t need to take your rage out on a college forum. “Mid april” is subjective. That’s the beauty and horror of it. Technically, mid april is April 15. Technically. So, if they say “you’ll hear mid april,” that’s what some people would assume. Of course, they could also refer to mid April as a duration of days (as you’re saying). I say I understand that, but I would consider April 20 to be late april (after all, it is the 2/3 mark of the month). But it’s subjective, and thus a poor decision on Mich’s part as it’s causing confusion.

And again, you’re acting as if I’m doing this because I’m entitled. I’m not. I’m doing this because I want to attend Mich and need a few days between then and May 1 to make decisions, check finances, etc. Stop throwing the “you’re a spoiled little entitled child” in everyone’s face.

I can understand the wait is hard for some, but I don’t see why there’s a huge issue. Make a decision based on the assumption that you are denied. Then make a decision based on the assumption that you are accepted. Once you find out, pick make the corresponding decision. Simple as that. You need what, 1 day, maybe 2 days notice so you can be sure that if your internet goes down you can check another way?

I don’t get what pleasure people who already go to UMich or who are alumni get in snapping at prospective freshmen. Yes, people are being whiny but some people who are snapping at them go to one of the best universities in the world. There are so many more fun things to do!

I knew somebody by a name MADMOODY would jump out whenever people complain of UM. Defending the university without any ratoinal reason/infomation but just dumping thousands of garbage posts making fun of others is what s/he really good at and enjoying everday. He thought he is the “special” top 1% (or maybe bottom 1% but accepted by mistake), and he has the right to slab on other kids. All of others, you are not good enough or not “special” as he is.

Those deferred or rejected, now you understand the reason why you ended like it is…becasue people like MADWOODY were accepted, and took your positions.

How2Pay, that’s one of the most unintelligent things I’ve ever heard. That’s just slander. Stop it. Mich is a great school, it just has some flaws.

Unless the poster’s son is attending an Ivy, that might be difficult. Michigan has one of the largest endowments out there. But clearly, they haven’t spent it on admissions staff this year ;)

That said, one important thing to takeaway from Bostonmom’s post is that finaid is known to be at times quite crappy for OOS students – Michigan does give finaid funding priority to its state residents/taxpayers. So while OOS kids with a 0 EFC might do alright, families with resources typically do not.

However, people seem to constantly overlook the fact that UMich is a public, not a private, and not a need-meet school. So if you’re OOS and waiting around for an answer from Umich and you don’t happen to have $48 K a year to spend (and your EFC is high)…you might as well move on now.

Just curious, but the Admissions Office told me today decisions will be out April 22, no sooner, no later. Does this still qualify as “mid April” ?

It doesn’t really do anyone any good to argue over the semantics of “mid-April”. I’m pretty sure most people will hear either tomorrow or Friday.

"My son applied EA, was deferred and was accepted, finally. However as an out-of-state student he received aid of $1300, while our EFC was $17K! So our dollars will be going elsewhere, and I hear the governor of MI is the commencement speaker at UMich/Ann Arbor and students are protesting the budget cuts he’s made. Best to move on to a better funded school. "

Bostonmom, I hope you are joking. The amount of people who are ignorant about the school baffle me.

You do know we have the 7th largest endowment in the nation, correct? The only public schools that have more at Texas…and they have 4+ campuses that are all large, unlike us with just Ann Arbor holding the majority. We also have the largest growing endowment in history, just FYI. We also don’t depend on the state for our funding; their contribution to us has been steadily decreasing over the past two decades. (one of the reasons why the school has steadily been increasing the # of out-of-state applicants)
