And They Say That the ZooMass Days are in the Past

“A UMass Amherst student was arraigned on multiple assault charges after he allegedly punched and kicked three Amherst paramedics and a Hadley police officer Saturday evening.”
Day drinking

Day drinking is not new, anywhere. Have you seen Ohio State campus at 7AM on a game day?

^^ Completely agree.

My D had to explain to me that “darty” = daytime party. Often on football game days (she’s at an SEC school) but probably plenty of other days, too. Classes are cancelled for a few days because of the impending hurricane, and I’d bet that’s a darty occasion.

I have several friends (age 50+) who drink all day long down the shore, sometimes starting as early as 10AM.

UMass continues to get a bad rap. Things like this happen everywhere, including Ivy league schools. Not easy getting into the school and, as such, people should focus on the positive aspects of the school.

@mcr976 But they happen with greater frequency at UMass than at many other schools.

I would disagree having been involved in higher ed for a number of years, most other schools (especially private) do a better job of making sure they stay out of the media’s attention.

When something does happen at UMass, the Boston press jumps on the story, as it fits, the ZooMass narrative. When you have 24K students, things are more likely to happen there. Shenanigans take place at all schools–I’m sure BC, BU, etc have their share, but not with the same level of attention as compared to UMass.

One student does not represent all of UMASS by the way.

When campus police get involved at a public school, it is public record. When it happens at a private school, it isn’t unless it happens off campus.
