@benevolent4them,
Hey so how much homework do you usually get and how do you handle it? I mean, I’ve heard that Andover freshmen get 3-4 hours of hw a night, but if you only have a 2 hour study hall how can you manage it?

The 2 hours are probably just “study hours”, which means that the dorm has to be quiet during that time. You can certainly work before or after the study hall time.

3-4 hours a night seems like a pretty realistic figure for freshmen. As musisat says, the 2 hours are in fact only study hours where you are required to be in a place of study. They are not however, silent hours. Essentially you are just required to sign a book that verifies your location. Mostly it is used as a way to keep track of students. These hours fall from 8pm-10pm. Additionally, students also have from 5-8 and 10-11 to complete more homework. Very, very few students will be able to effectively complete a 6 course work load in 2 hours. Teachers are supposed to give no more than 45 minutes a night, but this rule isn’t really followed.

Most students, freshmen not included, stay up until 12ish on school nights. Freshmen have mandatory 11pm lights out that may or may not be enforced depending on the dorm. Many student, myself include,d have occasional late nights when there are due dates threaten.

Hi! I am really thinking of applying to Andover! But what I would like to know is:
is it hard?
Is the drama department strong? (I am looking to improve my acting skills!)
I am thinking of applying for 11th grade only…is that allowed? Like applying for only 11th grade and not following through with 12th???
Oh and how is the homesickness?
Sorry if this is so much but I am very curious!
Thanks in advance!

benevolent4them: Andover keeps “coming and going” on my D’s short list. I think she is concerned about the intensity and remaining in the “middle of the pack” due to the academic talent that Andover draws. Your post #23 indicates that Freshmen basically have from 5 to 11 for homework. Obviously one has to fit in dinner, but do sports or other EC’s interfere with any of that time? Thats a substantial block of time so unless a student is fooling around, I would think one could retire easily by 10 or 11. Why the late nights?
