Andover and Exeter's Rivalry/Day/Week

Hi,
So I know there is rivalry for sports or something between these two? Could someone please explain it better?

Also I heard that there were Andover and Exeter Weeks, does Andover go to Exeter's school, or Exeter goes to Andover.

And if for example, Exeter goes to Andover, does all the students go? Or just a few? And what do they do at these events?

beyond amusing. i went to Andover and they all dressed up as Exonians to make fun of them  hilarious.

Isn’t that kinda rude…? lol.

Its a really serious rivalry.

just because it’s a serious rivalry doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s rude. That’s kind of mean…

At Exeter they dress up as Andover students, too. It’s a tradition. It’s done in fun. I don’t believe there is anything but fanning the flames of school spirit leading up to the main sporting events intended.

Andover-Exeter is a rivalry built on respect. Each is arguably the best prep school in the country and they both have been around since the Revolutionary War. Samuel Phillips Jr. started Andover in 1778, and three years later, his uncle John Phillips founded Exeter. The rivalry between the two, both academically and athletically, has flourished since. Imagine any great rivalry, that’s what Andover-Exeter is like.

Thanks for the posts,
So again, on Andover/Exeter days,
does Andover students go to Exeter’s school, or Exeter’s goes to Andover.

I believe it depends on who’s hosting the game.

So does all the students go?

probably not all the students go,

another question. Isn’t Andover bigger than exeter by quite a lot by students and normally rival schools have similar number of students, eg thacher+cate, Deerfield+choate, groton+st.mark’s

biancastarflare: Most schools have a day each term where the school teams play their rivals. Schools both host teams. I do not know how hosting is divided up. I do know for Exeter and Andover that most students play or atttend the games.

woowoo20: According to BSreview Exeter has 1063 students and Andover has 1105. The only rivalry that I could think of with really different enrollment is Deerfield (630) vs. Choate (850). I am not sure this impacts much since team size is team size. Additionally, certain schools have strengths in different places. For instance, the Field Hockey team at Hotchkiss (enrollment 599) has dominated the sport for years which means they often beat larger schools. Interestingly, last year the Championships of the New England Tournament were between Hotchkiss and Westminster (enrollment 390).

It’s not like they haze students of the other school. Lighten up guys.

It’s all in fun. Heck, bunch of my friends and some seniors this year bought a bunch of Exeter T-shirts at A/E day and started wearing them and acting like an “exonian” :D

What’s the difference between an exonion and uh an andoverian? lol

^I’m assuming that’s a joke, right?

they just ‘strongly dislike’* each other on principle.

*hate is a strong word

I’m a current Exeter student, and we did not dress up as Andover students this year.
Everyone here knows that Andover has a day where they dress up like Exonians. I’m sure they are classier and more stylish than normal on those days
Andover has a slightly larger enrollment than Exeter, but from my understanding, it doesn’t influence the games anyhow. A team can only be so big.
All the students don’t have to go, however, it is encouraged. Transportation is provided between the campuses.
It switches every term for who is hosting. Andover hosted in the winter so Exeter will host in the spring.
One of the greatest things about E/A current is that Exeter has won the football game four years in a row. It’ll be great to beat the Smurfs on the home turf this fall. :stuck_out_tongue:
Although it might sound mean, we do have a mutual respect for each other, no matter how nasty it might sound or be. It’s all in good fun.

Pittsburgher my apologies for the misinformation about both schools dressing up. Thank you also for clarifying the other details. Just out of curiosity are there any traditions at Exeter for the rivalry?

@fascination
since exeter students were called exonions i thought maybe the andover students were called andoverians, guess I was wrong, lol.
