ANDOVER images and video gallery!

Thank you very much, everyone! I appreciate it.

Hi, Circlemidnight! I participated in a bunch of really pretty varied extracurrics here; my biggest commitment was definitely to International Club, now Global Perspectives Society (GPS - see what we did there?). I started attending meetings as a new international student at the beginning of my first year here, Upper year. I got really, really into it and was ultimately elected President of the club, so that ended up being probably my largest time commitment during Upper Spring and Senior Fall. Aside from that, I also gave tours (ultimately being elected to Head Tour Guide) and attended Gay-Straight Alliance (ultimately being elected to Director of Outreach). I was also a proctor in my dorm, played squash and Varsity volleyball, and wrote for [The Phillipian Online](http://phillipian.net). To be quite honest, I spread myself pretty thin and wouldn’t recommend doing quite as much as I did. It was pretty stressful to juggle all of those activities, and while I was successful in the end, a little extra sleep would have been a good thing.

It’s important to note that all of this was possible to do even though I came in as a new Upper. Show some passion for something here at Andover and you will surely be rewarded, even if you’re not a four-year student. I’ve been infinitely impressed with my, and other students’, ability to take their passions as far as they can here. It’s easy and encouraged.

Hey, AndoverDiva! Thanks. I will keep adding, although I have only one week left on campus before I graduate! As we speak, I am uploading some photos and videos I shot over the weekend of the IndoPak festival and a Quidditch (yes, we play quidditch) game. They should be done uploading soon. Check them out :)

Hey, LaurKey13! Thank you very much! It’s nice of you to say. Actually, all my photos are taken with my iPhone 3GS. For panoramas like the one you mentioned, I used a 99¢ app called Pano that I purchased from the app store. All the photos are unmodified and are taken straight from the iPhone, which is also the device I use to shoot my video. Quality isn’t always great, but at least you know that all the videos are very much in-the-moment and candid, as if the viewer had actually been there.

Thank You!
Sorry to reply with a confusing question but, I believe it was page 5 or 4 that you answered in great detail about theater options. Would you happen to know about Andover’s Film classes? While I’d love to try out theater, I have always found myself more of a natural in Film & Screenwriting (or creative writing). My school has a total of 2 classes for these things and both are considered “blow-off” courses (photography 101 and film studies 101). Not to mention, they’re only available to seniors. Basically, I love the theater options offered but does Andover have a good amount of intensive film classes? If so I’m applying as a repeat sophomore or new junior, so would this be hard to get into with little background?

On a side note, I found Under the Bed’s youtube channel and some “Andover night live” videos- they’re simply brilliant!

Hello TomTheCat, I am going to apply to PA next year for grade 11. This is the first time I apply to boarding schools in USA, so I am a bit confusing. Hope you can help me! Thanks a lot!
1/ When do you think is the right time to do standardized tests (namely SSAT and TOEFL)?
2/ When do you think I have to complete my application?

Hey, 09Ti08!

I’m afraid I can’t help you with the TOEFL as that was a test that I was not required to take. However, I took the SSAT once in October of the year that I applied. However, I seem to remember that the SSAT is administered just about every month, so if that doesn’t work for you, you can take it most any date, as long as it falls before the application deadline, which is January 15 for domestic students and February 1 for those applying from other countries. That, I believe, answers your second question, but I’d check the PA website just in case.

Unrelated to your question but very related to the title of this thread: I just discovered this video when my PA acquaintance, Max, posted it on facebook. Max was a PA senior this year and put together an INCREDIBLE time lapse video filmed on campus. It’ll blow your mind. He did it himself.

Hi,
I was wondering if you knew what you had to pay for yourself at PA? Like whats not covered in the tution? And, can you leave campus on certain weekends to go back home?

oh and i forgot. Are a lot of the kids out of state? if so, are you not able to see your friends if you live very far from each other?

sorry for the awakwardnes of the questions :)

Hey Tom!

I truly appreciate your prudence in the answering of these demanding speculations. (Haha) They have helped me as I am positive this thread will continue to help others! One last question, I hope? What do you know about philosophy/ethics/religion classes. I’ll be an applicant re-doing the 9th grade if I am accepted to Andover. You think there are courses for me? I consider myself a bit advanced with these, mostly as a consequence of my fervor for philosphy. Would there be a class suitable for me to take then? Thanks for all of this help, you’ve really done more than you know! : D

Heh look at that the last post was a year ago today… I dont know if anyone will answer but i was wondering if someone could make a list of pros and cons between Exeter and Andover… I have a sibling that attends Exeter so I know more about it than i do about PA. If you know anything about other schools as well could you tell me I am applying this upcoming fall and I need to started filing down the list thanks! :)

If you do a search you can probably find many many threads about Exeter and Andover with some very helpful info.

Hey I just got my Dorm info today I am in Pine Knoll Cluster in the dorm E. Stuart North. Can anyone tell me about this dorm or cluster? I barely know anything about it and cannot seem to find any maps of the dorms on campus. Thanks.

I’ll pm you about it

I know this thread has been dead for a while, but as a graduate of PA’74 I registered in this site only to congratulate TomTheCat for an extremely enjoyable read. Have been unable to see the gallery, but all his detailed answers have given me a flavor of current day PA.
Had a laugh with the mention of “catboner”.
I usually remember many of the details of my three years at PA, and what I remember were simpler names like townies and preppies… so maybe the catboner thing is recent.

I got to this site looking for current cluster details.

I was wondering what happened to Rabbit Pond?

Tom mentions that the five clusters are West Quad North (WQN), West Quad South (WQS), Flagstaff (FLG), Pine Knoll (PKN), and Abbot (ABB). Those were the same when I graduated in '74 but there was also Rabbit Pond ( and maybe a Rabbit Pond East and West). But for sure, maybe not two, but there was a Rabbit Pond cluster made up of Stearns, Stevens, Stowe and half of Nathan Hale. Back then juniors were spread among the clusters and in Nathan Hale were the juniors of Rabbit Pond and Pine Knoll(I lived in Stimson my three years at PA). I even remember that Rabbit Pond’s cluster color was green, Pine Knoll was red, Flagstaff was orange and I do not remember the colors of the Quad clusters.

Anyway, congratulations again Tom, and god job dealing with pulsar so elegantly!

PA '74? Wow Welcome! We know a local PA alum who graduated in the late 60’s I think. He’s very active in organizing and hosting school related events. He once said the school’s very different from the days when he was there. Don’t know anything about Rabbit Pond. Interesting.

As for the rabbitt pond cluster, stearns and stowe have joined the abbott cluster, while stevens and all of nathan hale (which is now a junior girl’s dorm) are part of pine knoll. Hope this update serves you well!
