Anesthesiologist

Ok Parents.. I'm one of the 10'er students.. and I have some career question for you. How bad are malpractices and what not among doctors, especially for an anesthesiologist?

Do you mean how much is malpractice insurance or how often do anaesthesiologists get sued?

Malpracatice insurance is typically highest for anesthesiologists among med professionals, but it is very high for all areas of practicing physicians. Those involved in the area of surgery tend to be sued most often I believe.

About how much is that malpractice insurance per year? average...?

Although anesthesia had one of the highest rates for malpractice insurance in the 1980's, it is currently one of the lowest priced specialties. The change is due primarily to the routine use of pulse oximetry and end-tidal CO2 monitoring. The average rate will depend on the laws of state where you practice, and in most instances the specific city. In nearly all areas anesthesia premiums are lower than those of all of the surgical specialties.

I agree with wobudong - the incidence of errors by anesthesiologists fell dramatically because they as a group, they recognized their problem, identified processes and equipment that would improve their track record, and implemented the plan. Now their malpractice premiums reflect the much lower loss profile, and in our state, the premiums for anesthesiologists are not even in the top 15 specialties. The highest premiums go to ob/gyn's, neurosurgeons, and diagnostic radiologists.

Ok Thanks very much for the info. What about the demands? Say you've now completed your residency as an anesthesiologist... are you gonna be able to find a job easily? And I guess it's the nature of job to be usually on call?
